2023 Ends With ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’ Defeating Marvel’s Biggest Box-Office Bomb

If the superhero geeks were disappointed with ‘The Marvels’ performances this year, then DCEU’s Aquaman and The Lost Kingdomjust added fuel to the fire. The Jason Momoa starrer suffered a disastrous opening at the box office.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will mark DCEU’s final movie before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s much-hyped DCU takeover. The sequel serves as the follow-up to 2018’s ‘Aquaman‘, which broke expectations to become DC’s highest-grossing film ever, with a global box office total of over $1.1 billion. However, the sequel is the biggest disappointment of the year.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is a part of this year’s Christmas releases alongside ‘Wonka’ and ‘The Colour Purple’. It’s also the last film before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s version of renewed DCEU. However, according to Deadline, the Aquaman sequel had an opening weekend of around $40 million, which is less than ‘The Marvels’, which secured a $46 million three-day opening.

‘The Marvels’ had the worst debut for a Marvel Studios film and is the lowest-grossing MCU movie yet, with only $204 million, however, the disappointing performance of ‘Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom’ has blown off some heat from Marvel Studios.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran replacing the DCEU with the upcoming new DC Universe, the audience seems to have lost interest in the final projects. All of DC’s 2023 movies have underperformed at the box office, and the ‘Aquaman‘ sequel seems to have followed a similar trend.

Also, as the DCEU’s reign has almost ended, it was reported that all the actors from the 2017’s ‘Justice League’ will not reprise their roles in James Gunn’s envisioned DCU, and Jason Momoa’s return as Aquaman is highly unlikely in the future projects. With no promising future, the sequel of Aquaman lost a lot of momentum and the interest of the fans.
