The DC Universe is by no means relaxing into its next phase. Instead, it’s plunging viewers into the deep end, and ‘Supergirl‘ may be its most daring move to date.
New footage revealed at CinemaCon gives a much different impression of Kara Zor-El than viewers are accustomed to. It is not the refined, optimistic hero that we have previously encountered. This one is more coarse, more jagged at the edges, and much more erratic.
Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Brings Chaos And Attitude To DCU

From the moment Milly Alcock’s Supergirl steps onto that chaotic alien ship, it’s clear she’s not here to play diplomat. With weird animals around her and the tension mounting, she soon finds herself guarding a young girl named Ruthye as things get out of control. What ensues is not a heroic, neat rescue. It’s a haphazard, quick, and even careless one.

She talks back to the raiders, engages in a fight, and even takes some wrong steps in the process, accidentally striking a civilian in the middle of a fight. It is the type of flaw that makes this version of Supergirl more human, even in a room full of aliens.
However, the actual change is in her attitude. When she speaks of Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, as one who sees the good in everyone, she sees the truth. She is not attempting to live by her idealism; she is rebelling against it. And frankly, such tension could be just what this new DC era requires.
New ‘Supergirl’ Isn’t Your Typical Hero, And That’s The Point

In case the ship sequence reveals her personality, the space sequence reveals her size. Once thrown into the vacuum, Supergirl does not panic; she adapts. Sailing away, floating deeper into the dark, there comes a moment when it seems almost silent. And then she is back to action. This is followed by an all-out cosmic battle, with laser shots, huge vessels, and her literally flying into the sun to put the battle in her favor.

It’s big. It’s weird. And it is tilted towards DC’s sci-fi world. The video also foreshadows the larger world she is working in. Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, has a short but impactful appearance, adding a chaotic vibe that fits the tone perfectly. In the meantime, the relationship between Kara and Ruthye provides a touch of emotion, something to cling to in all that spectacle.
That equilibrium, between disorder and order, will be central. Due to this initial impression, ‘Supergirl’ does not feel like a typical superhero story. It’s a character study wrapped in a space opera, driven by someone who doesn’t quite fit the mold, and doesn’t seem interested in trying. And that may be precisely the reason why it works.
