The Creepy True Story Behind Audrey Hepburn’s Stolen Oscar

In Short
  • Audrey Hepburn's Swiss chalet was burglarized in 1962 while she was filming in France, resulting in the theft of her Oscar and personal items.
  • The thief, a 22-year-old science student named Jean Claude Thouroude, claimed his actions were driven by an obsession with Hepburn.
  • Hepburn's Oscar was later recovered, but the incident highlighted the darker side of fame and the risks of celebrity stalking in the 1960s.

In the summer of 1962, Audrey Hepburn was arguably at the peak of her fame and one of Hollywood’s leading ladies following her blockbusters such as ‘Roman Holiday‘ (for which she won her only Academy Award), ‘Sabrina,’ and ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’

At that time, she temporarily relocated to France to film Richard Quine’s ‘Paris When It Sizzles‘ with her co-star and former romantic interest, William Holden. However, the on-screen reunion didn’t bring any renewed attention to her life that some might have expected. During this period, her picturesque chalet in Burgenstock, Switzerland, a sanctuary overlooking Lake Lucerne, stood empty. What happened next in Hepburn’s life looked like a discarded script from a horror movie, courtesy of a burglary carried out by an obsessed fan.

While Hepburn was away, the intruder slipped into the chalet and stole a few unusual items. It included her Oscar Award, some of her personal trinkets, and guess what? Even her underwear. Talk about having a celebrity limerence!

Some reports even suggested that the thief might have also stolen a Picasso painting. It was only when one of Hepburn’s caretakers or Hepburn herself returned home that the bizarre incident was discovered. The local authorities were soon informed, and they started probing the incident.

Fortunately, Hepburn’s Oscar was found not far away from her residence, in a nearby forest. But the rest of her things were gone for good……..yes, including her lingerie. So what made the person drop the most valuable item? The actress later explained, stating that it was “the hardest thing to sell on the black market.”

The perpetrator was no hardened criminal. In fact, he was just a 22-year-old science student named Jean Claude Thouroude. But why did he commit such a brazen act of bravado? He admitted that he did so because of his self-proclaimed passionate obsession with her.

Besides, he even turned himself in on purpose, solely because he thought that going to court might just allow him to meet the love of his life.

Not surprisingly, Hepburn wanted nothing to do with the incident, and much to Thouroude’s disappointment, she was not present in the court. The judge handed him a fine of a few thousand dollars and a suspended sentence, offering a justification that still feels lenient today: “Love is not a crime.”

This just shows the darker side of fame in the 1960s, when celebrity stalking was often dismissed as harmless infatuation rather than a serious crime. For Hepburn, who already stood under the immense pressure of worldwide popularity, it soon became clear that even her private life in what should have been the safest of places was not truly safe.

For someone of Hepburn’s stature, this incident served as a painful reminder that her private life was never truly secure. The Belgium-born beauty, known for her effortless elegance and grace, did not have an ordinary childhood.

She survived the Nazi occupation, danced secretly to raise funds for the resistance, and most importantly, survived a near-death starvation. She understood the significance of fame and luxury because she experienced such inhuman struggles at the very bottom.

Still, many believe that the incident in her Swiss home, which she shared with her first husband, Mel Ferrer, made her realize it was no longer her secret place of comfort or safety.

Even years after the incident, it still feels deeply unsettling. Hepburn had an iconic Hollywood career before passing away in 1993. She is often remembered today for her kindness and for her tireless work for the betterment of society until her last breath.

But the burglary showed a different side of fame, one that shows how dangerous admiration can become when it ignores all boundaries. Hepburn’s Oscar theft serves as a reminder that even the most prestigious award in cinema can fall prey to obsession and later be found, if one is fortunate.
