Garbo Talksby Sidney Lumet stands out among other films that explore Hollywood nostalgia as a genre. In the story, a terminally ill Estelle Rolfe wants to meet her favorite actress, Greta Garbo, one last time. However, it is worth mentioning that her obsession with the legendary star is not ordinary fandom but much deeper.

The initial hesitation of Estelle’s son, Gilbert, to fulfill the request seems quite understandable since the actress has been a recluse for several decades and never participated in any Hollywood events. However, after realizing the gravity of the situation, he embarks upon an impossible task of trying to locate his mother’s long-lost idol. As he tries to make the meeting happen, he learns something much more important than the celebrity Greta Garbo.

Instead of being a typical Hollywood celebrity, Sidney Lumet uses Greta Garbo as a symbol of a much bigger phenomenon in ‘Garbo Talks.’

Throughout the story, Estelle is trying to meet the iconic actress for one simple reason—Garbo embodies beauty, elegance, and a glamorous escape from the disappointments of everyday life.

Thus, by setting up the entire plot in such a way, the director tried to show how people’s lives could be influenced by movies.

It is especially important that Anne Bancroft managed to embody a realistic image of a terminally ill mother instead of playing the stereotype of a woman whose end was near.

She is always arguing with her son, complains all the time, and never softens her character to elicit sympathy from viewers. Furthermore, the director showed how people try to escape from their problems with the help of movies.

Lumet brilliantly uses the cramped, chaotic backdrop of New York City to contrast sharply with Garbo’s unreachable, elegant world.

At first, Estelle’s son refuses to take her request seriously since he understands perfectly well that Garbo avoided any meetings and contact with fans.

Nevertheless, Gilbert decides to fulfill his mother’s final wish, and it becomes a great source of emotional tension in the movie. He desperately tries to reach the unreachable movie star and realize his mother’s dream at last.

It turns out that Gilbert fails to recognize his mom’s true personality because of constant quarrels with her. As he realizes that his mom is going to die, he is eager to learn more about her.

At last, the son understands that he needs to find Greta Garbo not just because of his mother, but because the actress becomes a symbol of reconciliation with those we love before time runs out.

The performance of Ron Silver is amazing since it allows viewers to witness the man’s transformation in terms of character development and emotional state. Furthermore, there are no unnecessary elements that would distract attention from the plot of the movie.

By the film’s conclusion, ‘Garbo Talks‘ becomes less about celebrity culture and more about the fear of losing someone before expressing love, gratitude, or understanding.
