Do you ever wake up from a dream, all baffled, and go “Wow, that would make an amazing movie”? Well, that seems to be the case with this 1955 classic black comedy drama movie. It all started with a dream that ultimately changed the scope of how we view crime drama movies.

The Ladykillers‘ is an exceptional yet underrated masterpiece when it comes to the genre. It’s got whimsy, it’s got comedy, and most precisely, it’s got old-school charm. Here’s everything that makes it one of the greatest comedy films.

Auguste Gusteau from Ratatouille said that artists come from anywhere, but that’s not all. The inspirations and the spark can also be derived from interesting sources. In this specific context, it has to do with dreams.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is one such case, but this goes back as far as 1955. William Rose had a dream and woke his wife up, and narrated the entire story. The next thing you know, it birthed one of the most fascinating movies in the black comedy-crime genre.

It is one of the one-of-a-kind movies that retains this very dreaminess and whimsical nature in most aspects.

Rose also wrote the screenplays of Maggie and The Man in the Sky, but there are many reasons why this one stands out. It’s got a gothic charm blended well with a fever-dream-like sequence, which is what makes it all the more interesting.

That’s also because the movie can easily pass off as being a ’20s detective movie, and rightly so. It does have a mysterious yet enchanting ambience, but it does brilliantly well as a comedy of errors.

What makes Alexander Mackendrick’s film so alluring is its framework. It’s not your usual run-of-the-mill crime comedy, no. Rather, chaos ensues right from the get-go as we’re introduced to the 5 notorious gangsters.

They approach Mrs. Wilberforce, and what follows is absolute and utter mayhem. The gangsters masquerade as musicians in a quintet and use this farce to eventually carry out a robbery. They succeed but are caught by Wilberforce, and this is where things get interesting.

They all try to end the lady as a result of her finding out the truth. She is now in a precarious position; however, they eventually dig out of their ditch. It all ends with the gang ending each other in a crossfire while she comes out alive.

Wilberforce gets hold of the money, only for it to be given away to a painter as a result. When she narrates her share of the story, it is all dismissed by the end, but hold up. We’re not done yet!

The Ladykiller is downright hilarious with its characters’ expressions and antics. From the side pushes to the chaotic falls, everything about this movie would have you in stitches. Alec Guinness’ brooding yet comical demeanor is a cherry on top.

Not to mention, music adds yet another layer to the juxtaposition of crime and comedy in the movie. It is a must-watch if you’re looking for a drama movie with a gothic and black comedic flair!
