Garry Marshall Wanted To Catch Julia Roberts Off Guard
During the filming of ‘Pretty Woman’ in 1989, Julia Roberts was only 21 and was finding her footing in the industry. Garry Marshall wanted to capture her natural innocence, aiming for the chemistry between Roberts and Richard Gere to feel completely playful and alive.

This was especially true during the sequence where Edward presents Vivian with the beautiful necklace to match her red opera gown. Marshall later revealed Roberts seemed a little sleepy that day, so he looked for a quick way to get a real reaction from her.
He quietly pulled Gere aside and told him to snap the jewelry box shut just as Roberts reached toward it. The goal was simple: surprise her and see what happens. When the cameras rolled, Gere followed through.
As Roberts’ character reaches for the necklace, the lid snaps shut, and she bursts into laughter. The reaction was completely genuine because she had no warning. Marshall got exactly what he wanted, a moment that felt spontaneous instead of performative.
The Scene Was Never Supposed To Make The Final Cut
At first, no one on set treated the footage like an important part of the movie. The prank worked, Roberts laughed, and the crew moved on. As far as Marshall and the team were concerned, the clip was just a funny on-set moment. For a while, the production planned to leave it out of the film.

The Necklace Made The Moment Even More Nerve-Racking
Meanwhile, the scene carried another layer of pressure because the necklace was not a cheap prop. The piece used in the film was made with real jewels and came with a price tag to maintain the authenticity.
According to reports, the necklace was crafted from white gold, diamonds, and 23 rubies, costing approximately $250,000. That meant the scene did not just involve an improvised joke between the stars but also involved handling a very expensive piece of jewelry while the cameras rolled.
Because of that, the jeweler required tight security on set. A security guard reportedly stood just off camera and watched the necklace throughout filming. So while Roberts and Gere were laughing through one of the film’s most charming moments, someone nearby was making sure to keep quarter-million-dollar necklace safe.
