After her breakup with Joe Alwyn, Taylor Swift has come out with a string of shady statements that suggest she was increasingly unhappy with her then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. From slamming a ‘private’ relationship to telling fans she was ‘lonely’ during her relationship with the actor- Swift is showing no mercy to her ex-boyfriend of six years.
As Swift’s fans quickly switch sides to paint Alwyn as a villain, the question persists, is he actually one? Are Swifties biased to overlook everything and pin all the blame on a man who wanted a private relationship? And most of all, did Taylor really ‘hate’ her private relationship with Joe Alwyn?
Swifties Started A Hate Train Against Joe Alwyn
It took one day for the entirety of Swift’s fandom to turn their backs on Alwyn. While some of the insults he got were childish and less harmful, most of these suggested that he was a villain for apparently not wanting to marry Swift (based on a lyric from ‘You’re Losing Me’), not letting her shine (another lyric from ‘Bejewelled‘) and not giving Taylor the life she deserved.
In a week’s worth of time, the British actor became, perhaps, the most criticized one of Swift’s exes, with fans going as far as pointing fingers at his career and how he profited off of Taylor’s fame, while in the same breath complaining that he was a terrible partner for never speaking about Swift in public.
After Swift’s relationship with Kelce went public, the hate train got stronger. A successful football player with a lavish and high-end lifestyle who ‘fought for the right to party’ was being compared to a quiet British actor who mostly kept to himself and minded his own business. The more Tayvis went public, the more Joe Alwyn got slammed.

While Swifties continued to hate the actor, Swift didn’t do much to stop it. On the contrary, she announced a Joe Alwyn-coded album with Joe Alwyn-coded songs. Apart from that, she also made a few snarky comments which seemed to have everything to do with her shading Alwyn.

How Has Taylor Swift Shaded Joe Alwyn Post Breakup?
Known for shading her exes after breakups, Taylor Swift gave the same treatment to Joe Alwyn, who, if you listen to ‘Lover‘ and ‘Reputation‘ clearly, seemed like the man Swift would finally end up with- thanks to how beautifully she portrayed him in her music. As the singer fell in love with the British actor and his lifestyle, somewhere we did too. Until a random day in April when it was reported that the couple had broken up for good.
During one of her shows, she talked about how she felt ‘lonely’ during the time she was writing ‘Folklore‘– despite her and Alwyn being together during that time. He also helped her write two songs- ‘Exile‘ and ‘Betty‘.
“[I was] imagining that, instead of being a lonely millennial woman covered in cat hair drinking my weight in white wine, I was a ghostly Victorian lady wandering through the woods with a candle in a candlestick holder,” she said, regarding her writing process when it came to the album.
In her interview with TIME magazine, Swift opened up on her relationship with Travis Kelce, while also seemingly shading Joe Alwyn. She said, “When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don’t care. The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
She then referred to her private relationship with Joe and said, “Me locking myself away in my house for a lot of years — I’ll never get that time back.”
However, a little digging and time reversing on the internet will tell you quite the opposite actually. Did Joe Alwyn really make Taylor live a private life despite her wanting to publicize the romance?
Taylor Swift: “We Decided Together That We Wanted Our Relationship To Be Private”
Dodging a Taylor Swift question during a GQ interview, Alwyn said “Someone’s private life is, by definition, private. No one is obliged to share their personal life.” Putting Alwyn aside, here’s everything Taylor has said in the past about her decision to keep here relationship private.
In 2019, speaking to The Guardian, Swift refused to talk about her relationship and said, “I’ve learned that if I do, people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion… That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”
In her documentary ‘Miss Americana‘, Swift talked about falling in love with Joe and said, “[I] was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life and we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private.”
In another interview, as she explained her song ‘Peace’, she said, “I think that in knowing [Joe] and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids….The idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy. That’s what that song ‘Peace’ is talking about.”
In one of her songs on ‘Midnights‘ called ‘Paris’, Swift sings, “Privacy sign on the door, and on my page, and on the whole world. Romance is not dead if you keep it just yours.”
“Privacy sign on the door, and on my page, and on the whole world. Romance is not dead if you keep it just yours.” Talk your shit, Miss Swift.

In Case You Missed It: Taylor Swift Fans React To Travis Kelce Being A Fantastic Boyfriend; Comparing Him With Joe Alwyn
Is It Right To Blame Joe Alwyn For A Relationship Of Six Years Breaking Apart?
Here’s the real thing: adult relationships sometimes break apart. People go their different ways because they desire different things out of relationships. There doesn’t always have to be a villain in every love story breaking apart. As a conclusion, Joe Alwyn doesn’t deserve the hate he is getting for being at the other end of a breakup that we, as the public, know nothing about.
As for Swift penning ruthless songs for Alwyn, we’ll only ever know her side of the story and whatever version of it she writes about. It’s time Joe Alwyn is left alone and we celebrate the beauty of Taylor’s relationship with Travis Kelce instead of drawing parallels every chance we get between the player and the actor.
Nevertheless, 19th April will reveal a lot more about the Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn breakup (Taylor’s Version). Till then, all we can do is patiently wait for the album to drop and then draw conclusions if needed.
