One of the major surprises came during the season finale episode of season 3 of ‘Bridgerton‘. And no we are not talking about Lady Whistledown’s revelation to the ton. The surprise was the gender swapping of Francesca’s future love interest. Francesca was supposed to fall in love with Michael, John’s cousin but instead we are greeted by Michaela Sterling.
Showrunner Jess Brownell had previously revealed that this gender swap was done to make the series more queer inclusive. But many fans were not so happy about deviating from the books so much. And they have also been worried whether Eloise’s character will have the same fate.

Jess Brownell On Whether Eloise’s Love Interest Will Be Gender-Swapped
‘Bridgerton’ showrunner Jess Brownell talked to TVLine about Eloise’s love interest. “We’ve talked about Eloise in the room a lot about the fact that to a lot of people, she does read as queer, and I totally understand why,” Brownell said. “But we felt it’s really important to hold space in this show where everyone is obsessed with romance for there to be a character — specifically a female character — for whom that is not the priority.”
Since ‘Bridgerton‘ has given no inclination that there would be a season focused on Eloise in the near future, it seems she will have to wait a bit longer. Brownell reveals the intent is not that she “just needs to meet someone of the right gender.” Instead, the series will explore how Eloise is “genuinely more interested in cerebral pursuits”.

Eloise Will Have To Wait Longer For Her Love Story
The Netflix series has mixed up things quite a bit. They jumped Benedict’s story and put Colin’s before that. So given the timeline Eloise will have to wait a bit more longer for her love story to unfold. Jess Brownell also said that she understands why fans want to explore a queer angle with her character. But for now, it will have to wait although she is not scraping it off entirely.
“I absolutely understand why people have thought that about Eloise,” Brownell explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “I wanted to hold space for that because not every young woman is solely interested in romance. That’s not to say that Eloise won’t open up to love in the future, but for now, that’s I think, where she’s at.”
