Is Guy Ritchie’s Netflix Series ‘The Gentlemen’ Linked To His 2019 Film With The Same Title?

Alright, folks, hold onto your hats, it is about time we dive back into the grey world of London. Guy Ritchie‘s latest Netflix series, ‘The Gentlemen’, finally made its debut on March 7th and I bet that reminds you of a time before the pandemic changed the world.

Are you thinking what almost all the other fans are thinking? Isn’t that the same title as his 2019 movie? Yep, it is, so buckle up, because we’re about to peel off the layers of connection between these two gems mafia gems.

Now to establish the connection let us jog your movie junk brain a little. Remember when Matthew McConaughey ruled the screen as Mickey Pearson, the mastermind behind a lucrative marijuana empire? That’s right, we’re talking about Ritchie’s 2019 film, ‘The Gentlemen’ which seems to be the laywork of this latest show starring Theo James.

We’ve got a spin-off series of the 2019 blockbuster hit but it’s not sprouting from the branches of the og movie as one would. The Netflix show for sure draws inspiration from the movie but it’s got its own story to tell. In the series, we’re introduced to Eddie Halstead aka your favorite guy four from ‘Divergent’. Theo James’s character in this show is a British soldier who inherits his family’s estate after his old man kicks the bucket. But here’s the kicker, Eddie’s posh family property is hiding some shady secrets, including some very intriguing ties to Mickey Pearson’s under-the-radar hobbies, that’s where your connection is.

Sprouting from the thriving grounds of Mickey Pearson’s story, what makes the ‘The Gentlemen’ series stand out? Well, besides the slick visuals and gripping plot twists, it’s the themes of tainted family legacy and that oh-so-classic age-old clash between the haves and the have-nots. As our hero Eddie swims through the murky waters of his inheritance, he’s forced to bend his morals and who doesn’t like that game?

Other than its roots that stem from Guy Ritchi’s $115 dollar 2019 success what makes this series a promising one is its stellar cast. With a badass drug dealer Susie Glass, played by  Kaya Scodelario who doesn’t leave the game when the big boys join it’s safe to say that this series has the kickass heroine part covered. The ‘Spinning Out’ star shared some thoughts on her character before the show’s premiere. Saying, “I very rarely get to portray women that are already at the top of the game when you meet them. It’s always a young woman finding her way in life. But what I loved about Susie is she’s a boss, she’s good at her job, she can run things, she knows exactly what she’s doing.”

Plus, Theo James delivers a knockout performance as Eddie, balancing the vulnerability of the character with the grittiness of the setting in all the right ways. The ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ star shared some thoughts of his own on this new world he just entered.  “The melding of the aristocracy and the underworld, and how those things collide in the bombastic way. Britain is so defined by class, and we love it and hate for various reasons, but defining it in the melee of this was really fascinating for me,” the actor told BBC during a chat at ‘The Gentlemen’ series’ premiere.
