The Screen Actors Guild Awards or the SAG Awards were held successfully on February 26, 2023, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California. The awards honor the outstanding performances by the actors in the preceding year and are hosted by SAG-AFTRA, which is the union of actors across the United States. The voting process for the awards involves voting by all the actors and actresses enrolled in the guild. The 2023 SAG Awards concluded with huge fanfare and many A-list celebrities graced the red carpet and award show. ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ is a fantasy adventure movie. It features the story of a normal Chinese immigrant who gets stuck in a multiverse. She is tasked with saving the world from a multiverse villain.

The lead actress of the movie, Michelle Yeoh, who played Evelyn Quan Wang, won the Best Actress trophy. Yeoh became the first Asian woman ever to do so. Yeoh was very emotional during her acceptance speech and said “I think if I speak, my heart will explode.” She also added, “This is not just for me, this is for every girl who looks like me. Thank you for giving me a seat at the table.”

The movie ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ also won the most prestigious award of the night which was Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The entire cast was enthralled and emotional and thanked the union for the award. The award was dedicated to 94-year-old actor James Hong who thanked everyone for the honor. The movie also bagged both the supporting actor and supporting actress awards with Ke Quy Huan and Jamie Lee Curtis both winning their respective nomination. The only acting category where the winner was not from ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ was the Best Actor category. Actor Brendan Fraser won that award for his role as Charlie in ‘The Whale’.

Actor Ke Huy Quan accepted his award with a very tearful speech. He said, “Recently, I was told that if I would’ve won tonight, I would become the very first Asian actor to win in this category. When I heard this, I quickly realized that this moment no longer belongs to just me. It also belongs to everyone who has asked for change.” The actor had quit acting after many hit roles when young. He is now enjoying a resurgence as more and more Asian actors are getting opportunities in Hollywood.

Jamie Lee Curtis also won her nomination for Best Supporting Actress as IRS officer Deirdre Beaubeirdre. She said in her acceptance speech, “I love acting, “I know you look at me and think ‘well, nepo baby, that’s why she’s there’, and I get it, but the truth of the matter is, I’m 64 years old and this is just amazing.”

The movie’s unprecedented victory at the SAG Awards with 4 awards out of 5 nominations boosts its chances before the marquee Oscar ceremony. With 11 nominations already in the bag for the movie at the Oscars, the idea of ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ walking away with several top prizes doesn’t seem very farfetched.
