The internet’s ultimate horror experience is finally making its way to the big screen with the release of ‘Backrooms’ later this month. Unsurprisingly, the hype around this movie is well-warranted. Instead of the usual anticipation surrounding the premiere, the buzz around the film has shifted to the young prodigy behind the scenes, Kane Parsons.

Norwegian star Renate Reinsve has already showered her praises on the 20-year-old director. In her own words, the actress was impressed by Kane’s eye for detail while creating this film’s haunting universe. Check out what she said about him.

The Norwegian actress, who plays a psychologist searching for a lost patient in a bizarre dimension, enjoyed working with Parsons. Despite her limited experience in Hollywood, the young filmmaker exhibited the professionalism of a true veteran, according to her.

Speaking of her work under his directorship, Reinsve lauded Kane’s meticulous side.

“It was very impressive, actually,” she said. “He knew exactly what he wanted, and he had such a world of deep references to what exactly, specifically, he wanted, like even the wires, like everything, the way he talked about it.”

I felt very safe in being in his world, because it was so specific. And also, he would come up, every end of the day, he would come up and say, what can I do better tomorrow?” she added.

“He was so humble about getting that, like his first movie made, and really wanted to learn,” the actress added. “And I felt that he was taking care of everyone, but still very flexible about where we wanted to go and what we needed as actors, for instance. So, no, I was very impressed.”

What is more interesting is that, for a professional international actress, receiving all this from a rookie director is surely something to be amazed at.

Parsons is ready to bring ‘Backrooms’ from YouTube to the movie screen. At only 20, he will become A24’s youngest feature director when this horror film hits theaters on May 29, 2026.

It features talented stars, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins are serving as producers. Meanwhile, Will Soodik remains the genius behind the movie’s chilling screenplay.

Parsons’ film adapts the viral YouTube series of the same name that he created as a teenager in early 2022. The project attracted many viewers with its bizarre universe of endless yellow walls and fluorescent lights.

With the backing of A24 and Chernin Entertainment, ‘Backrooms’ extends the deeply lonely universe into the psychological journeys of many characters.

In order to achieve perfect physical logic of the universe, Parsons, along with cinematographer Jeremy Cox, used Blender. It’s free and open-source 3D graphics software used to create Parsons’ internet videos, ensuring logical continuity.

Thus, the spatial principles established in the original version won’t change in the adaptation.

“I always try to stay away from the idea that the backrooms is somehow a dreamy headspace thing where, if you turn around, the room could have changed,” the filmmaker said, adding, “the horror of it is that you are in an infinite and unchanging space. Eventually, you just have to give up trying to map it.”

Parsons treats the movie as purely physical rather than as the product of human imagination. For him, the ‘Backrooms’ universe becomes a symbol of sensory deprivation.

According to him, people become desperate and start seeing terrible patterns within the walls’ noise because of their starved nervous system in such a place.

With Hollywood giants backing him up and a starry cast playing characters in the adaptation, Parsons is ready to prove that even an internet creepypasta can become a sophisticated work of art.
