Did Prince Harry’s Birth Ruin Princess Diana And King Charles III’s Marriage?

The last two decades of the 20th century were the most tumultuous for the royal family. Princess Diana and King Charles III made headlines almost daily due to their failing marriage. Even before Charles admitted infidelity, Diana was aware of his misdeeds. But the only glimmer of hope for the couple was Prince Harry and Prince William’s birth.

Prince Harry was born on September 15, 1984, at St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing. It was unfortunate that Harry spent less time with his mother after she died in 1997. It was a year after Diana divorced King Charles III after separating in 1992. Diana claimed that Harry’s birth completely changed the dynamic of her marriage. As per her admission, the couple’s marriage went “down the drain” after he was born. But, King Charles III cites different reasons for the failure of their marriage.

In 1992, British royal reporter, Andrew Morton published an explosive account of Princess Diana and King Charles III’s marriage in his book ‘DIANA: Her True Story.’ However, after her tragic death in 1997, he published a different edition of the book, in which he wrote about Diana’s accounts as she narrated them.

In the new edition titled, ‘DIANA: Her True Story In Her Own Words,” Morton included the account where she said that post-Harry’s birth, her marriage was on the brink of getting destroyed.

Princess Diana said, “Then between William and Harry being born it is total darkness. I can’t remember much, I’ve blotted it out, it was such pain. However, Harry appeared by a miracle. We were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be.”

Diana continued, “Then suddenly as Harry was born it just went bang, our marriage, the whole thing went down the drain.” Diana even talked about it to Queen Elizabeth II about her failing marriage, but she blamed it on Diana’s bulimia. But the princess felt that it was just a symptom.

The duo, King Charles III and Jonathan Dimbleby have always been controversial. Be it the 1992 biography or the explosive infidelity interview in 1994, Charles III has been unfiltered with Jonathan about his marital life. In the infamous 1994 interview, Charles III confessed that he was not faithful during his marriage. But, in ‘The Prince of Wales: A Biography,’ Charles’ account of the failing marriage was in contrast to that of Diana’s.

In the book, Jonathan writes, “While she was pregnant with Prince Harry and for six months after his birth. The Princess made no further official visits abroad, preferring to stay at home with her very small children.”

The journalist continued, “For much of the time they lived within the shell of a normal marriage, though they still lacked the intimacy and mutual understanding without which the relationship could not grow.”

Jonathan added, “The Princess had dispensed with the services of her psychiatrist, saying that she was better. However, her swings of mood continued, and there were periods of distress that were exhausting to both of them.”
