Prince Harry’s attempts to rebuild his relationship with King Charles reportedly came with some pretty serious ground rules. After years of royal revelations, palace insiders claim Harry had to formally promise that private conversations would remain private before a recent family reunion involving Meghan Markle and their children.
Prince Harry Reportedly Faced an NDA Before Royal Reunion
Harry has remained estranged from much of the royal family since he and Meghan stepped away from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. Their relationship with the royals became even more strained after several television interviews and the publication of Spare, where Harry shared deeply personal details and conversations involving senior members of the family. Now, as Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet are uprooting their lives to return to Britain, the issue of trust appears to be front and center.
Harry and Meghan reportedly reunited briefly with Charles alongside Archie and Lilibet during the Duke’s recent U.K. visit. However, sources claim Harry first had to formally promise that nothing discussed during the meeting or in future private meetings would find its way into another memoir, interview, or Netflix project.
One palace source said: “The problem with Harry is that trust has never fully recovered since he stormed away from the royal family. It was agreed that any return would occur only if everyone believed private conversations would remain private. In practical terms, that amounted to him being forced to sign a glorified NDA before he and Meghan met Charles. Discretion has become the price of rebuilding relationships.“

Security Measures Could Go Beyond Confidentiality Agreements
According to another insider, future meetings could involve additional security precautions, including leaving recording devices outside and undergoing routine checks. The source said: “Nobody wants a repeat of the last few years. There is an expectation that any devices capable of recording conversations would be left outside, and security staff could carry out routine checks before private discussions – including frisking Harry and his family. It is about protecting confidential family conversations, not humiliating Harry.”
Harry was reportedly frisked for recording devices before his latest meeting with Charles. A source close to the Duke painted an even more dramatic picture of how things have changed behind palace doors, saying: “The discussion stage is essentially over when it comes to reunion meetings with him and the royals. He is now seen as a spy, and treated like one.”
However, other palace insiders reportedly believe security is only one part of the much bigger issue facing the family. Charles remains personally willing to repair his relationship with his younger son, but sources claim the King is proceeding with “extreme caution” following years of public disclosures.
One courtier explained: “There is a feeling that the family cannot go through another round of revelations from Harry. Before there is any meaningful reunion, Harry now has to give firm assurances that he will not speak publicly about private family matters.” Another palace source added: “His memoir and the interviews spooked everyone. From the family’s perspective, trust was badly damaged. Silence and discretion are now the price of his re-entry.”

Meghan’s Presence May Have Changed The Palace’s Approach
Interestingly, reports suggest Harry faced no frisking or device checks during his September 2025 meeting with Charles at Clarence House in London. Their private meeting over tea lasted 54 minutes and marked their first face-to-face interaction in 19 months. Early speculation portrayed the reunion as tense or frostbitten, but Harry later pushed back against that version of events, calling those claims an invention.
A source believes that Meghan’s attendance at the more recent July meeting could explain why palace aides allegedly recommended stronger confidentiality measures. They said: “It is very possible Meghan Markle’s presence at the July meeting with Harry and Charles meant aides advised Charles to get Harry to sign a confidentiality agreement about the meeting.“
Meghan reportedly did not have to sign a separate document because Harry’s agreement supposedly covered the entire family. One insider claimed the royals also wanted to avoid creating another future controversy, explaining that Meghan was not required to sign because it “covered their whole family” and the royals did not want to “hand her another stick with which to beat them in the future.”
