The Boys‘ spin-off, ‘Gen V, ‘ was canceled only after two seasons. But now creator Erik Kripke has revealed that he originally planned for a ‘Gen V‘ season 3, and it would have picked up directly from the explosive events of the finale.

The canceled season was not just another campus-based chapter for the young supes. Kripke says the finale was clearly setting up Marie as the next major “good supe” after Annie, which means ‘Gen V‘ season 3 would have carried some of the biggest unfinished threads from ‘The Boys‘ universe forward.

In a recent interview with Variety, Erik Kripke opened up about the ending of ‘The Boys‘ and the story he had in mind for ‘Gen V‘ season 3 before the show was canceled. Even though ‘The Boys‘ has now ended, the franchise will continue through the upcoming prequel ‘Vought Rising.’

But Kripke also made it clear that the finale left behind several storylines that could still make sense in the future. The return of Stan Edgar as Vought’s interim CEO, Hughie and Annie’s child, and the changed place of superheroes in the world all created fresh possibilities. When asked whether those threads could appear again, Kripke turned the focus toward Marie and the ‘Gen V‘ characters.

“You have Stan Edgar basically disavowing relationships with superheroes,” Kripke explained. “These people who have been coddled and protected this whole time are now suddenly out in the wild. Who tries to be Jessica Jones, and who tries to be a supervillain?”

At the center of this chaos would have been the ‘Gen V’ kids. They will be forced to confront an unstable society where institutions keep falling apart, and heroes lean more towards choosing darker paths.

“The plot challenges they would have had to deal with were almost a metaphor for being a young adult, which is like you’re out in the world and there’s no infrastructure or jobs anymore,” Kripke revealed. He wanted the young supes to be responsible for building the future.

Despite ‘Gen V’ season 3 cancellation, Kripke has made it clear that he has not abandoned these ideas. In another interview with The Wrap, Kripke said, “I don’t want to give away too much, because we’re honestly hoping to fold it into some other projects”. Though Gen V season 3 is over, Kripke is still not giving up on the young supes. The writers hope to weave their stories into future projects set in ‘The Boys’ universe.’

Kripke also revealed one larger theme that fascinated him the most. “Every young superhero coming out of that school thought they were going to have a steady job. And then suddenly companies that are too big to fail fail.” He stated. “Now none of them have jobs, and none of them can pay rent. And there’s all these superheroes loose in the city. And some are going to choose to be good, and some are going to be bad”.

He compared this directly to the anxieties faced by many real-life college graduates. Especially when they try to build a future in a system that no longer feels secure. These feel like very relevant topics to Kripke that he wants to explore more in the future. “I’m hoping to get some of this energy into other projects.” He stated.

So, now only time will tell where these characters will pop up next. Because, according to Kripke, the door remains wide open for the ‘Gen V’ to appear in future spin-offs or stories set in ‘The Boys’ universe.
