Even though ‘Game of Thrones’ ended seven years ago, HBO has no plans to abandon Westeros. Instead, the franchise could be in its most ambitious phase ever, as several new projects have been confirmed or are actively being developed.

Following the mixed reception of the original series finale, many fans were unsure whether they would continue to be invested in George R.R. Martin’s universe. ‘House of the Dragon’ has since answered that question with a resounding yes with its success.

The mature projects are already making progress. ‘House of the Dragon’ is nearing the end, as season 4 is set to be the show’s final one. The Targaryen civil war is one of the most epic events in TV’s fantasy genre, and the audience is waiting for the next big showdown.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, meanwhile, is another bright spot for HBO. The show has been a breath of fresh air when compared to the political turmoil of other Westeros stories, and its smaller-scale storylines and focus on Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg have been refreshing.

After positive feedback and audience response, season 2 is already underway. ‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ could be the biggest expansion to date for the franchise. This story is being developed as a theatrical film, unlike any previous television project. Aegon Targaryen’s fabled conquest could be a big-screen dragon battle on a massive scale.

In addition to the announced titles, HBO is also interested in animated adventures. The Golden Empire, The Sea Snake, and Ten Thousand Ships are all in the works. The projects would enable the franchise to go far beyond known locations.

Yi Ti, Princess Nymeria’s journey across Essos, and Corlys Velaryon’s legendary voyages could introduce cultures, kingdoms, and mysteries that have only been briefly mentioned in the books.

The details of which animated series will proceed are still up in the air. However, the continued investment in new stories is a sign of great confidence in the franchise, nonetheless. That’s good news for fans. Westeros is no longer just a TV show; it’s a vast fantasy world with dragons, explorers, conquerors, and heroes ready to be the protagonists.
