Who Is Mister Marathon In ‘The Boys’? Jared Padalecki’s Role Explained

In Short
  • Jared Padalecki will portray Mister Marathon in season 5 of 'The Boys'.
  • Mister Marathon is a morally ambiguous character, diverging from Padalecki's typical heroic roles.
  • The character's backstory involves a dark history and speculation about his fall from grace in the superhero world.

Jared Padalecki is literally entering the messy world of ‘The Boys’, and it’s not in the manner most fans anticipated. Padalecki is famously known for his heroic role.

However, this time around, he is playing a character that is messy, morally dubious, and very on-brand to the show, with its twisted interpretation of superheroes.

Jared Padalecki’s Casting As Mister Marathon Sounds Wild

Padalecki affirmed at a convention that he will feature in season 5 as Mister Marathon, which longtime comic readers will instantly identify. The actor confessed that he had been holding on to the secret for almost a year after shooting in April 2025. He even joked that he was afraid to tell it too soon.

“I can finally say it. We shot it a year ago. We shot in April of 2025, and I was terrified of saying it because I thought Jeff Bezos might send a SWAT team after me. Okay, yeah, I am Mister Marathon,” he shared. It is truly thrilling to watch him rejoin other ‘Supernatural’ stars like Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, particularly with showrunner Eric Kripke.

However, do not look for a heroic reunion. Kripke has already foreshadowed that their characters are driven to the extremes of the worst possible traits. They are arrogant, morally ambiguous, and funny in the most perverse manner. This casting is refreshing only because of that tone change. Padalecki has built a career playing characters you root for. Here, you might enjoy watching him crash and burn instead.

Mister Marathon Isn’t Your Typical Speedster

In the original ‘The Boys’ comics, Mister Marathon predates A-Train as a speedster and serves as a parody of classic heroes like Jay Garrick. His tale concludes with a violent airplane crash with Homelander, a dark reminder of how careless and corrupt superheroes can be in this world. The show, however, already changed that fate.

Mister Marathon has been mentioned as living, and there is a lot of speculation surrounding his disappearance from the Seven. Padalecki has a lot to work with that mystery. Is he a faded-out hero? An ex-member in disgrace who sought to scratch his way back? Or some other ego-driven supe who was not able to keep up?

Considering the history of ‘The Boys’, it is likely to be all of the above, with a hint of satire and awkward reality. One thing’s clear: this isn’t just a cameo for nostalgia. It is as though it is a calculated step to investigate another failed hero in a world where power nearly always corrupts. And, frankly, the sight of Padalecki indulging in that messiness could be one of the most delightful surprises of season 5.
