    For all the glitter surrounding the Oscars, there are a few unfortunate times when excellence goes unnoticed. In recent years, it has become a hotbed for controversies. People must remember that the event is about the movies, not the politics. Like every year, this year saw some of the best films ignored by the Academy.

    The Oscars are a great night for acknowledging the work that goes into filmmaking. But for the ones at home, it’s a chance to catch up on some of the year’s best movies. Like all art, movies are also subjective. The following films, while not Oscar-nominated, were among the best of the year.

    Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision to Leave’ is a meet-cute with murder on its mind. This Hitchcock-inspired thriller is a stylish and yielding mystery we hoped would be nominated for the Oscar.

    ‘Nope’ directed by Jordan Peele

    Jordan Peele confirms his auteur status with ‘Nope.’ It’s an inspiring work of horror and pure cinematic art. The movie should have earned Peele the Best Picture and Best Director nominations.

    ‘Till’ starring Danielle Deadwyler

    Danielle Deadwyler gives one of the most’s poignant performances of the year in ‘Till.’ Still, it wasn’t enough to be nominated for the Oscars. Based on a real-life event, ‘Till‘ was a thoroughly engaging film that deserved a seat at the table.

    The Woman King

    Viola Davis leads this epic action film.

    Gina Prince-Bythewood directs a period piece we don’t see more often. From its start to the finish, its ambition never gets out of hand. With formidable women at the center of formidable action, this movie should have been nominated.

    She Said

    Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan in ‘She Said

    Looks into Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor’s investigative reporting on Harvey Weinstein, thereby shaping the #MeToo movement. It’s an understated film that approaches its filmmaking in a journalistic manner. ‘She Said‘ explores past trauma and the process of healing in the most empathetic way. 

    Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood

    Richard Linklater directed ‘Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood

    Richard Linklater weaves a tale of childhood nostalgia and the space craze in the nostalgic story of time and memories, finally finding perspective. The Academy did not appreciate Richard Linklater’s return to rotoscope animation, shutting the film out.

    It’s easy for films like ‘Resurrection‘ to get lost. ‘Resurrection‘ looks into a never-ending cycle of cultish violence and a history of trauma. Everyone will talk about Rebecca Hall’s performance, but Tim Roth, as the cult leader, is the ultimate wolf in sheep’s clothing. An Oscar nomination for this film would have meant the world.

    Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal romance is a heartbreaking story. ‘Bones And All‘ is a complicated journey about finding and accepting love while fighting against one’s loneliness. It is grotesque and graphic but warm and loving simultaneously, with gorgeous cinematography and acting performances.
