William McNamara was once one of the most familiar faces in ’90s films, but he suddenly disappeared from Hollywood at the peak of his career.
Now, the ‘Copycat‘ actor has opened up about why he walked away from acting, how he spent most of his savings, and the heartbreaking reason he kept going during one of the darkest periods of his life.
How William McNamara Found A Different Purpose Outside Hollywood

William McNamara became popular in the 1990s with films like ‘Copycat‘, ‘Chasers‘, ‘Sweet Jane‘, and ‘Texasville‘. At one point, he worked constantly and appeared in several movies every year. But after starring in five films in 1998, his acting work quickly slowed down, leaving fans wondering what happened to him.
In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Inquisitor, McNamara admitted that addiction played a major role in his struggles during those years. “I had an ongoing drug problem. And that really gets in the way,” he shared. The actor also proudly revealed that he is now “21 years sober… no drugs, no alcohol.”
Still, McNamara said addiction was not the only reason he left Hollywood behind. Over time, he became deeply involved in animal activism, and it slowly became the center of his life. “It becomes the only thing in the world to you,” McNamara explained while talking about his growing passion for helping animals.
His work with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society even took him to Taiji, Japan. McNamara said he traveled there to protest against dolphin hunts, where dolphins died for meat or captured and sold to aquariums. During the protests, authorities arrested him. Footage from those events later became part of the Oscar-winning documentary ‘The Cove‘.
How Animal Activism Changed McNamara’s Life

McNamara said his activism gave him purpose. But it also created financial problems because there was no money involved in the work. “You don’t get paid,” he explained. “You end up going through your savings.” Even though he still appeared in smaller acting roles during the 2000s, the steady Hollywood career he once had slowly disappeared.

The actor believed acting jobs would always come back when needed. But he later realized things had changed as he got older. “But as you get older… not so,” he admitted. Thankfully, McNamara returned to acting in the mid-2010s and started landing more television movie roles. He even appeared in five movies from Vivica A. Fox’s ‘The Wrong…‘ series for Lifetime. Still, his love for helping animals remained just as strong as before.
McNamara also shared an emotional story about his pitbull named Boo. The dog was diagnosed with cancer, and the treatment costs became extremely expensive. According to McNamara, chemotherapy bills reached almost $1,200 every week. He even traded his car for an older vehicle that could keep running with the air conditioning on. It was done so Boo could stay cool and comfortable.
The actor admitted that Boo’s illness pushed him into a very dark emotional place. McNamara revealed that he even thought about ending his own life while trying to care for the dog. But in the middle of all that pain, Boo gave him a reason to keep fighting. “I stayed alive for her,” he explained. “That was my reason for being.”
McNamara once again showed his dedication to animals during the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025. While fires spread across areas like Palisades and Altadena, he focused on rescuing animals that people had left behind during evacuations.
