Sam Neill‘s passing at age 78 has prompted fans to revisit some of the most personal stories he shared during his lifetime. While the actor earned global fame through films like Jurassic Park, one chapter of his personal life has touched people all over again.
Years ago, Neill spoke about reconnecting with his eldest son, Andrew, 25 years after placing him up for adoption, and explained why their reunion turned out very differently than many would expect.
Sam Neill Said Reuniting With His Son Was Not The Emotional Scene People Expected

Years before his passing, Neill sat down for a rare interview with the Sunday Times and described his family as “slightly unusual.” He also joked that it was “more extended than most.” The conversation soon turned to Andrew, giving fans a glimpse into one of the most personal parts of his life.
At the time, Neill explained that Andrew was placed for adoption when he was still in his early 20s. Looking back on those years, the Jurassic Park star said, “I was quite small, too, in my early 20s. I didnโt see him for 25 years, and then we went looking for each other.” Eventually, father and son found one another after spending more than two decades apart.
However, the reunion was nothing like the dramatic scenes people often see on screen. Neill explained, “Most of these stories are sentimental and grisly.” He then added, “No one sobs in anyoneโs arms; itโs much more grown-up.” According to the actor, there was “nothing sentimental” about the reunion. Instead, the experience gave two adults the chance to build a relationship on their own terms.
Besides opening up about Andrew, Neill also shared one piece of advice he wished he could give his younger self. According to the actor, “youโre more capable than you think.”
Sam Neill Built A Beautiful Family In The Years That Followed

Meanwhile, his family continued to grow over the years. Neill welcomed his second son, Tim, with actress Lisa Harrow in 1983 after the pair met while filming ‘Omen III: The Final Conflict‘ in 1981. Later, he married Japanese make-up artist Noriko Watanabe in 1989, and they welcomed their daughter, Elena. Neill also adopted Watanabe’s daughter, Maiko, from an earlier relationship. Eventually, the couple ended their marriage in 2017.

Although Neill usually kept his personal life away from social media, he made one sweet exception in 2021. After becoming a grandfather, he shared a photo of himself holding newborn Nahlo and wrote, “The Love. I donโt put family on media stuff. Except when theyโre brand new. This is my brand new grandson Nahlo, the bestest boy, 2 weeks old.”
The heartfelt post did not end there. Neill also wrote, “So chilled, no fuss. Just eats, sleeps and thinks about things. Parents blissed out, and everybody happy. Me particularly. The love.” Unsurprisingly, fans loved seeing such a warm side of the actor.
Later, in March 2023, Neill spoke to the Guardian about growing older. He admitted watching his “lovely little grandchildren” grow up was one reason he wants to live. Even so, he also made it clear that he was “not afraid to die”. Sadly, heartbreaking news arrived just two months after Neill confirmed he was cancer-free following his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.ย
The actor’s family announced his “sudden and unexpected” death in a statement, saying, “It is with immense sadness that the whฤnau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia.” They also shared that Neill “passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life” and promised, “more details.”
These deeply personal memories continue to remind fans why he will be remembered not only as a screen legend but also as a devoted father and grandfather.
