“I Am Sprouting Finally Above Ground”: Victoria Monét Wins Three Grammys Including The Award For Best New Artist

The Grammys night on Sunday called for a celebration for many celebrities. But Singer-songwriter Victoria Monét is still an exception as she won three Grammys in a single year for different categories — including the highly coveted General Field.

The Grammys took place on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The 66th annual celebration of musical talent was a star-studded event with dazzling faces both on the red carpet and on the event dais.

During the premiere ceremony of the Grammys before the main telecast, Victoria Monét clinched the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical award for her debut album, ‘JAGUAR II’. Sharing the recognition with accomplished engineers such as John Kercy, Kyle Mann, Patrizio “Teezio” Pigliapoco, Neal H Pogue, and Todd Robinson, Monét’s win in the engineering forte added another feather to her cap.

In the competitive R&B Field, Monét’s ‘JAGUAR II’ made its mark as the Best R&B Album. The category boasted strong contenders like Babyface’s ‘Girls Night Out’, Coco Jones’ ‘What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe)’, Emily King’s ‘Special Occasion’, and Summer Walker’s ‘CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP’.

Though these awards also hold significance for her, the grand moment came during the main telecast when Monét was awarded the Best New Artist. The award is given to an artist who releases the first recording that establishes their “public identity” in that particular year, according to the Grammys.

For Monét — who has been a longtime songwriter for other artists including Ariana Grande and Chloe x Halle — her debut solo album ‘JAGUAR II’ made her eligible for the honor. The album’s breakout hit, ‘On My Mama‘ peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In her acceptance speech, Victoria reflected on her journey’s challenges and triumphs. “This award was a 15 year pursuit,” Monét said.

I moved to LA in 2009 and I like to liken myself to a plant who was planted. You can look at the music industry as soil. It can be looked at as dirty, or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath the ground unseen for so long. I feel like today I am sprouting finally above ground,” she added.

Acknowledging her support system, Monét thanked her visionary team for believing in her when others didn’t. “I’d like to thank my team of visionaries who could see through that soil,” she said.

The singer received a total of seven Grammy nominations, for her versatility across categories like Record of the Year, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song.

JAGUAR II’, released on August 25, 2023, through RCA Records, debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. The album’s success was complemented by Monét’s sold-out ‘JAGUAR’ Tour as well.

Beyond the Grammy Awards, Monét continues her impressive run with six nominations at the upcoming 2024 NAACP Image Awards, where she is competing for Outstanding Female Artist. Fans can catch the live ceremony on Saturday, March 16, at 8 p.m. on BET and CBS.
