The glamorous world of Hollywood is no exception to the patriarchal society that we live in. The gender pay gap across industries is a prevailing issue that seems to have no end. While many prominent figures in Hollywood and otherwise have spoken up against the unfair practice, very few female voices in the entertainment industry are among these names.
Olivia Colman, known for her outstanding performances in ‘The Crown‘, ‘Fleabag‘ and ‘Wonka‘, has opened up about her struggles as a female actor in the industry. The outspoken actress has not held any bars as she went on to criticize the norm of men getting more highly paid than women.

Olivia Colman Opens Up About Gender Pay Disparity In Hollywood
Olivia Colman got candid about the gender pay disparity in Hollywood as she shed light on how even accomplished actresses like herself get paid way less than their male counterparts. During a recent interview on CNN’s The Amanpour Hour, Colman said she is frustrated with the industry’s wage gap.
“Don’t get me started on the pay disparity, but male actors get paid more because they used to say they drew in the audiences,” ‘The Crown’ actress said. “And actually, that hasn’t been true for decades, but they still like to use that as a reason to not pay women as much as their male counterparts.”
When asked about her personal experiences with pay disparity, Colman said that her even impressive resume — including an Oscar, two Emmys, and four BAFTAs — has not shielded her from the pay disparity. “I’m very aware that if I was Oliver Colman, I’d be earning a f— of a lot more than I am,” she said. “I know of one pay disparity, which is a 12,000 percent difference. Do the maths, I know,” she said.

Many Female Artists Have Spoken Up Against Gender Pay Disparity In The Entertainment Industry
Other than Colman, many other female celebrities have spoken out against gender inequality in wages. Some popular names among them are Debra Wilson, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams, and Taraji P. Henson, who have all addressed the issue and called for the need for a systemic change.
Henson has also brought attention to racial pay disparities, as she expressed frustration and exhaustion over the industry’s inequities. “I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do, getting paid a fraction of the cost,” Henson said during an interview on Sirius XM radio.
“I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ I have to. The math ain’t mathing,” she added at the time.
