As the Oscars loom, Julia Roberts has heavy praises for Barbie actor Ryan Gosling. The 56-year-old actress exclusively spoke to People about her favorite Oscar-nominated films as well as actors.

She was speaking at an intimate dinner hosted by Chopard at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on Friday. The actress was celebrating the launch of her Chopard-Julia Roberts collection.

Speaking to People, the actress drew attention to Ryan Gosling, who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a movie for the upcoming Oscars. He’s also scheduled to perform his iconic ‘I am just Ken’ during the Academy Awards, set to be held on Sunday.

Praising Ryan Gosling, Julia Roberts said, “I met Ryan recently a few times, and when you bring such dimension to a performance, it’s remarkable.”

She also added that the Greta Gerwig-directed film ‘Barbie‘ was so unique and new. Roberts, who herself is an Oscar award winner for best actress in 2001, said she understands “how much the nominees are going through.”

“The craziness, the getting ready. You just have to embrace it all almost like a sporting event as you’re going through it,” she said. She also added that this preparation also includes having a thick skin when it comes to social media scrutiny.

A particular interview that is about six years old went viral recently, wherein she could be heard admitting that she was hurt by Instagram comments made about a photo of her that her niece Emma Roberts posted.

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2018, Roberts opened up about joining Instagram and how it has impacted her life.

“One weekend morning, Emma slept over and we got up and we were having tea and playing cards and having this beautiful morning. And then a couple of days later she posted a picture of us,” she said while speaking to Harper’s Bazaar at the time.

“And the number of people who felt absolutely required to talk about how terrible I looked in the picture, that I’m not aging well, that I look like a man, why would she even post a picture like this when I look that terrible?” Robert said that the comments amazed her and impacted her a lot.

“I’m a 50-year-old woman and I know who I am and still my feelings got hurt. I was sad that people couldn’t see the point of it, the sweetness of it, the absolute shining joy of that photo. What if I was 15?” he said.

Though she said she was surprised that the clip has surfaced again, she said she understands the reason behind it.

“So many people think that’s a new interview, but I clearly say I’m a 50-year-old woman. Well, I’m 56 now,” Robert said humorously to People. “But the fact that we are still here and this vitriol is still happening six years later shows how little progress we have made,” she added.

During the dinner event on the eve of International Women’s Day, she also reminded men to be active while doing their part. As they toasted women in the room, she said, “All of you gents, hold us up a little higher.”
