More than a decade after he first stepped into the arena as Peeta Mellark, Josh Hutcherson is ready to admit that the bread wasn’t worth the weight.
In a candid new conversation with Variety’s Actors on Actors, the 33-year-old actor sat down with his former co-star Elizabeth Banks to discuss the psychological whiplash of global fame, revealing that he spent years feeling “resentful” and “angry” about the franchise that defined his early twenties.
Josh Hutcherson Opens Up About Sudden Spotlight Pressure

For Hutcherson, who was 19 years old when the first film premiered in 2012, the transition from a small-town Kentucky kid to the face of a billion-dollar dystopian empire was jarring. While co-star Elizabeth Banks described watching the young cast’s rise as “like watching a supernova take off,” Hutcherson admitted that for him, the supernova felt suffocating. “I started acting when I was a kid because I liked the idea of making movies. Fame was never on my radar,” Hutcherson explained. “And then I was thrust into that world in such a big way. It was a lot.”
Speaking to Banks, who played the effervescent Effie Trinket, Hutcherson confessed that the pressure manifested as hostility. “For a long time, I was resentful toward it, because I didn’t want that kind of attention,” he said. “So I was chip-on-my-shoulder angry about it”.
That anger, he suggests, stemmed from the loss of privacy and the sudden inability to live a normal life. In previous interviews, he elaborated on this period, describing that leaving the house felt “hardcore” and that the constant surveillance led him to develop a defensive shell.
Post-‘Hunger Games’ Rejection Shocked Josh Hutcherson After Years of Steady Work

However, the struggle didn’t end when the final ‘Mockingjay‘ premiered in 2015. In fact, that’s when a different kind of shock set in. While many actors chase the stability of a franchise, Hutcherson discovered that being the second lead in a global phenomenon created a dangerous illusion of security.

In a separate interview on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s On Me podcast last year, Hutcherson detailed the “complicated” fallout post-‘Hunger Games‘. Having worked steadily since the age of nine, he had never experienced rejection until his mid-20s.
“The industry is so goddamn tricky, because they set you up in this way where they’re like, ‘You’ve arrived,’” Hutcherson recalled. “But as quickly as they’re excited to get you into the spotlight, they want to not give you anything else… I tasted my first feeling of disappointment, failure, rejection, probably when I was 24 or so, 25.”
Suddenly, the boy who always booked the role was auditioning for parts and being told “no.” The offers dried up, forcing him to grapple with an identity crisis he hadn’t anticipated when he was painting himself into rocks as Peeta Mellark.
How Josh Hutcherson Made Peace With ‘The Hunger Games‘

Today, Hutcherson says those years of struggle were necessary. With the perspective of time, and reportedly with the help of therapy, he has redefined his relationship with his past. “With years of perspective, I have grown to appreciate it so much,” he told Banks. That appreciation now includes seeing a new generation take on the franchise with the upcoming ‘Sunrise on the Reaping‘.
When asked if he is excited for the future of the series, Hutcherson acknowledged that while his personal experience was fraught, the story’s message remains vital. “It’s cool to see it continue,” he said, “Unfortunately, it’s still a very timely issue with authoritarian governments, so young people need to be educated”.
The actor, who recently starred in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2‘ and ‘The Beekeeper’, has since ditched the chip on his shoulder. By stepping away from the “massive machine” and prioritizing his mental health, including stepping back from social media, Hutcherson says he has finally made peace with the boy from ‘District 12‘.
“I didn’t want that,” he said of the spotlight. “But with time, you realize it was an incredible ride.”
