From the sweet love story of Marshall and Lily to the chaotic tale of Nick Miller and Jess Day, every feel-good series needs its own off-the-wall chemistry. Pluto TV’s Hart of Dixie definitely hit the jackpot with the romance of Wade Kinsella (Wilson Bethel) and Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson).

Recently, the show’s main cast reunited for the comedy-drama’s 15-year anniversary celebration. The group included Bilson, Bethel, Jaime King, and Kaitlyn Black. At the event, Bethel shared a revelation about how his and Bilson’s characters have evolved since the show’s end. And honestly, it might catch fans of the show’s beloved couple off guard.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bilson and Bethel discussed the status of their on-screen characters today. “I think they’ve had more kids because, you know, they’re in Bluebell. What else are they gonna do?” Bilson joked. “I’d love to see where they are in 2026, that’d be super fun.”

Meanwhile, Bethel offered a bit more insight into their happily-ever-after storyline while adding his own wild twist. “I think Wade and Zoe are together after having gotten divorced, like, four times,” he said. The response cracked Bilson up, and she couldn’t help but agree.

Their playful back-and-forth exchange revealed that the chemistry between them, which originally made the characters so lovable, remains intact. When the first season of ‘Hart of Dixie’ debuted in September 2011, fans believed Zoe would end up with George Tucker (played by Scott Porter).

However, things took quite a turn when Bethel’s character joined. “I don’t remember when the decision was made; I think it was a natural progression because Wilson and I were having so much fun on screen together—not that Scott and I weren’t, because those scenes were amazing, too,” Bilson explained.

In her view, viewers tend to like it when the female lead goes after a “bad boy” or “unexpected choice.” She believes the same philosophy played into her on-screen relationship with Bethel. After all, fans did not hesitate to fall in love with their newfound connection.

For four seasons, Wade and Zoe went through the usual cycle of getting engaged, splitting up, and eventually getting back together, until it was finally time to introduce little Jack Harley Kinsella into the world.

Yet Bethel’s hypothetical version of events offers an amusing glimpse into their chaotic relationship. The idea of Wade and Zoe splitting four times before reuniting sounds pretty much believable, given their history.

“I think it’s been a roller coaster, man,” Bethel said. “I’m still rooting for them, but they’re not the easy couple.” We think it’s a good thing they weren’t so easy, because that kind of chemistry rarely works for entertaining television.

Here, their complex, difficult relationship proved incredibly realistic and satisfying. Even after 15 years, the strong Zade fan base believes it’s much more appealing to root for a flawed, yet beautiful and passionate romance than a perfect fairytale.
