The announcement of an AI-generated audiobook of ‘The Odyssey‘ narrated by a voice modeled on Michael Caine‘s has sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans were excited to hear the legendary actor guide listeners through the classic tale, others felt uneasy about AI recreating the voice of a living performer.
The project quickly became a talking point among movie and tech fans alike, and many are debating whether this is an exciting step forward for storytelling or another sign that artificial intelligence is becoming too involved in creative work.
Michael Caine’s AI Voice Brings ‘The Odyssey’ To Life

The discussion began after AI audio company ElevenLabs announced a new audiobook version of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey‘. Released through the company’s ElevenReader app, the roughly 13-hour production uses AI throughout the entire project, including voice performances, music, and sound effects.

Michael Caine’s AI-generated voice serves as the narrator, while a cast of 20 AI voices performs the remaining characters. The audiobook also arrives just weeks before Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, making the timing especially notable given Caine’s long association with the filmmaker.
Speaking to Variety, ElevenLabs’ head of partnerships Dustin Blank explained why the company chose the Oscar-winning actor’s voice to lead the production. “Our version of it is another retelling of it that we think is really strong — it does justice,” Blank said.
“It has a cast of 20 characters, all from our voice library, and Michael Caine is a legend. He is a national treasure, and his voice means so much to so many people, and we thought that he, as the narrator, would be the perfect person to help tell this story for his part in it, and I think he does.”
Fans Were Divided Over The AI-Generated Narration

As news of the audiobook spread online, many social media users shared mixed reactions. Some questioned whether audiences even wanted an AI-generated version of ‘The Odyssey‘, particularly one built almost entirely through artificial intelligence. One user, Pete Warbis, reacted by asking, “Why would ANYONE want to listen to this?”

Others responded with humor while expressing concerns about where AI could take the entertainment industry next. D Conran wrote, “May as well just create a AI-Generated Voice of Homer to narrate it with an AI-Generated Voice of Matt Damon doing the sound effects…” The comment reflected a wider concern that AI-generated content could eventually replace more traditional creative work.
Some reactions focused specifically on Michael Caine. One confused user posted, “Wait a minute, Michael Caine died?!” after seeing discussion surrounding the AI-generated narration. Another user, Lou Seale III, replied to one of Caine’s older posts by writing, “AI could never,” suggesting that technology still cannot replicate the qualities that made the actor’s voice so iconic in the first place.
Although some listeners welcomed the project as an innovative use of technology, the online response showed that many remain cautious about AI recreating the voices of beloved actors. As a result, the audiobook became part of a much larger conversation about authenticity, creativity, and the future of entertainment.
Whether audiences ultimately embrace that vision or remain cautious about it, the strong reaction to Michael Caine’s AI-generated narration shows that the conversation around AI in entertainment is only getting louder.
