The ‘Clayface‘ trailer is not your average superhero teaser, and that’s a good thing. Rather than action-packed fight scenes or cameo appearances from other DCU characters, DC Studios is leaning heavily into something more disturbing: a gradual, emotional transformation into body horror.
It’s all about Matt Hagen, and his transformation is already looking like one of the most harrowing the DCU has ever tried.
The Trailer Shows A Villain Origin That’s Hard To Watch But In A Good Way
The trailer doesn’t rush. It lingers. We see Hagen bandaged, crushed, and desperate, an actor trying to hold onto his humanity after a terrible accident. This desperation leads to experimental surgery, and then things go awry. The shots of his face warping, reforming, and almost ceasing to be human are jarring.

It’s not stylish superhero injuries; it’s invasive. You can feel the helplessness, and that’s what makes the clip so powerful. There are also some nods to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, with the origin story using a synthetic compound rather than an accident.
It makes the narrative about poor choices under duress, which is always more compelling than chance. And then there’s the emotional hook. Hagen isn’t just turning into a monster; he’s turning into a ghost. That’s the kind of horror that sticks.
‘Clayface’ Is Setting Up Gotham

Beyond the makeover, the trailer does something else: it shows us the DCU’s Gotham. For the first time in live-action in this new universe, we see the city, from the Narrows to Amusement Mile. These details matter more than they seem.
Gotham is a character. And by introducing it here, before Batman is officially part of the DCU, the film is setting the stage, slowly and carefully.

We also see glimpses of the larger world, the police, the underground, the kind of trouble that can’t be ignored. It’s the kind of place that needs a vigilante. However, most of all, it’s about tone.
James Gunn’s vision for the DCU is not that it will be one way. ‘Clayface’ is gritty, dark, and intimate, unlike ‘Superman’. And that might be DC’s best bet. Because if this trailer is anything to go by, the DCU isn’t just aiming to be bigger, it wants to be bolder.
