With the release of ‘Supergirl’ on the horizon, star Milly Alcock has been the subject of another online debate, this time over her honest opinion of Kara Zor-El’s sexuality.

The actress, who first made headlines as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon’, has been making headlines throughout the ‘Supergirl’ press tour. That’s not to say the movie’s action or story didn’t get fans talking, but during a recent interview, it was a different aspect that did. And it was Alcock’s refreshingly honest take on the iconic DC hero.

At a promotional event, Alcock spoke about Supergirl’s relationship with queer fans and her thoughts on the character’s sexuality. The smiling actress said that Kara “probably goes both ways”. “I don’t know, I think that what makes this film so beautiful is that it’s not centered around a man, it’s not centered around love at all. I don’t really know. She’d probably go both ways,” she explained.

The comment was not intended to be a change to DC lore, but rather Alcock’s interpretation of the character she plays. She also expressed her positive relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, saying that she has many close friends who are queer and that she is privileged to receive support from her fans.

The most impressive was the explanation behind her response. Alcock said that she views Kara as a person beyond conventional labels and expectations. That’s one of the things that makes Supergirl so interesting to her. For many fans, the answer felt real.

Alcock’s remarks come as part of her general strategy with regard to the character of Kara Zor-El, who will be the lead in one of the most significant projects within DC Studios’ new cinematic universe.

Supergirl is based on the popular comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which follows Kara on a journey across the galaxy with Krypto the Superdog. This story differs from the previous live-action versions of the hero as it follows a more complex and battle-worn Kara as she struggles with loss, identity, and responsibility.

Alcock has previously discussed the nerves she experienced when auditioning for the role, and it marks a significant step in her career. In retrospect, she said she had overcome her doubts.

But as the film nears its release, it’s evident that Alcock is taking more than a superhero act to the screen. She may be stirring up a lot of debate among fans, whether they like her take on the character or not, but that’s what makes her version of Supergirl so unique.
