A fresh clip from ‘Supergirl’ has provided fans with their best glimpse yet of the bond between Kara Zor-El and Superman, and it could be one of the sweetest moments the DC Universe has ever seen.

The preview doesn’t have so much action or spectacle, but a personal moment between two Kryptonians meeting on Earth. It’s a simple scene, but one that reveals a lot about the direction James Gunn’s DCU is heading in as it continues to develop its interconnected universe.

Superman opens an escape pod and finds a young Kara Zor-El inside with her companion Krypto. The two have a familial connection, but watching them interact for the first time brings a new level of emotion to the characters.

The awkwardness of the scene makes it particularly memorable. Superman immediately replies in Kryptonian, asking if he is Kal-El, to which Kara responds with a nod. Superman immediately speaks Kryptonian and asks if he is Kal-El, to which Kara replies with a nod, and then admits that he doesn’t actually speak the language.

He was a native of the Earth and had not been taught on his home planet the way that Kara was. It’s a very human moment. Superman is usually calm and confident. However, for a split moment, he is speechless.

As Kara wonders about her cousin’s costume, she has a fun exchange that is just a good fit for her personality. The scene also helps to make the point that Superman doesn’t just consider Earth his home. He’s genuinely hoping that Kara can get the same sense of belonging that he had as a kid among humans.

The preview is another reminder that the DCU is placing a strong emphasis on character relationships. Superhero films tend to be about world-ending threats and huge battles. But moments like this allow viewers to relate to the heroes on a more human level.

It could be the emotional base that is vital to ‘Supergirl’. Milly Alcock’s Kara is already known as being more rebellious and unpredictable than her cousin. As she arrives on Earth and starts to acclimate herself to her new reality, viewers get a new look at a character who has always been shadowed by Superman.

If this brief scene is any indication, Supergirl won’t just be another superhero adventure. It could become one of the DCU’s most emotionally engaging stories, beginning with a heartfelt welcome from the hero who knows Earth better than anyone.
