Fernando Mendoza, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is expected to miss a planned White House visit with his former Indiana Hoosiers football teammates as he begins his rookie campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The visit, scheduled for May 11, comes after Indiana’s historic 16-0 season and College Football Playoff National Championship victory on January 19. Mendoza, who was selected No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23, indicated that the timing may clash with the start of organized team activities.
“I believe May 11th (the day of the Hoosiers’ White House visit) is the first day of OTAs (organized team activities) … if it is on the first day of OTAs, like I say, I’m at the bottom of the totem pole here (in Las Vegas), I’ve got to prove myself,” Mendoza said on May 2.
He made it clear that establishing himself at the professional level takes precedence, emphasizing the importance of being present from day one.

Mendoza’s transition to the NFL follows a historic college campaign, highlighted by his Heisman Trophy win in December 2025. Rather than attending the draft in person, he chose to celebrate the milestone privately at home in Miami, surrounded by family.
Mendoza cited both logistical considerations and personal priorities for the decision, including his mother Elsa’s health. She lives with multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair, making the intimate setting all the more meaningful as he marked the start of his professional journey.
Fernando Mendoza’s No. 1 NFL Draft Selection Is Facing Early Debate

Fernando Mendoza’s No. 1 overall selection in this year’s NFL draft has prompted discussion among analysts evaluating the 2026 quarterback class. Tom Pelissero said that while Mendoza was widely viewed as the top quarterback available this year, his standing could have shifted if other prospects had entered the draft.
He explained, “In all my quarterback research this year, and talking to people about Fernando Mendoza: Where would he fit in? He’s clearly QB one in this class, but where would he fit into a broader group of quarterbacks?”
He added that some evaluators believed other quarterbacks, including Dante Moore and Brendan Sorsby, carried first-round grades and could have influenced the top selection.
