“If I’m Still Alive”: Ian McKellen Reacts To His Rumored Return As Gandalf In ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’

Very few people get to live their whole lives doing what they love the most. Ian McKellen is one of them. Still young at heart, the 85-year-old actor is living his life on the stage not wasting one minute. He is currently gracing the stage as Falstaff in ‘Player Kings’, Robert Icke’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV. But will he be interested in coming back in one of his most legendary roles?

Ian McKellen was asked in an interview how he feels about coming back as Gandalf in the upcoming Lord Of The Rings’ movie. The actor did not hate the idea but did not confirm anything either. Warner Bros studios recently declared the upcoming movie titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.

In a recent interview with The Times Of London, the ‘X-Men’ star talked about the idea of returning to his famous role as Gandalf in the upcoming ‘Lord Of The Rings’ movie. McKellen said that he has heard of “stirrings in Tolkien land”. The actor mentioned that he had not shaved because of his role as Falstaff. This gave him the iconic look of Gandalf.

But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” he said. When asked if he might be interested, he chuckled saying, “If I’m alive.” Previously another very integral actor of the franchise showed his interest in returning to LOTR. It is none other than Viggo Mortensen who plays Aragorn. It’d be great to revisit that universe. But I don’t know how that would happen exactly. Of course I’m open to it,” he had said.

Warner Bros Studios has announced a new film in the LOTR franchise which is set to release in 2026. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ will focus on Andy Serkis’ Gollum. It is undoubtedly one very important and interesting character in the franchise and fans are excitedly looking forward to it. Reports are that original trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be producing the movie.

And recently in an interview with Deadline, Jackson talked about why focusing on Gollum was interesting. “The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Jackson said.

“I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us,” he continued. “We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien,” Jackson added.
