Why Was Wonder Woman Banned In Tunisia?

The DC Extended Universe has been revamping the superhero universe since the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger. David Zaslav, the CEO of this merger, has been making efforts to reinvigorate the cinematic universe of superheroes. While they are bringing comic favorite characters to the universe, they are re-introducing the characters that did not appear for the longest period in a full-fledged role. But, there are movies like the ‘Wonder Woman’ franchise that may not see the light of day.

In 2017, Gal Gadot wore the superwoman cape. Some of the badass villains were introduced including the female antagonist Isabel Maru aka Doctor Poison. The film received raving reviews across the board. The Guardian called it “a gloriously badass breath of fresh air”. Unlike the other female characters, she is empathetic, and gosh! She is saving the world, unlike a Black Widow or Catwoman. The film grossed $821,847,012 worldwide despite getting banned in several countries including Tunisia. Why was the DC film banned?

Why Did Tunisia Ban Wonder Woman?

The whole fiasco of bans originated in Lebanon where they banned the film. There are many strict anti-Israel policies in the country. During the Nuits du Cinéma film festival, it was banned in Algiers. Jordan had an unusual case where they first banned the film and then unbanned it and finally banned it again.

In June 2017, a group called the Tunisian Association of Young Lawyers filed a lawsuit to call for a ban on the film. The hate for the film was so strong that people in the United Nations sent a petition against the decision naming it the ‘Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women And Girls’.

The reason the film was widely banned across the Middle East is due to the nationality of the protagonist. Gal Gadot is an Israeli woman, who also served in the army. The actress has been a vocal supporter of Israel’s cause and supported the Gaza-Israel war. The war was due to the controversial Gaza Strip, the Palestinian coastline which the militant group Hamas occupied. This kind of backlash was not seen during the ‘Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice’.

On December 8th, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter ran a story about the uncertainty looming over the third installment of ‘Wonder Woman’. It reported that many sources told the portal that the head honchos are not moving forward with the next chapter of Wonder Woman. Reportedly, the maker Patty Jenkins submitted the draft to the executives at the new Warner Bros. and Discovery partnership. Warner Bros. did not accept her treatment in the film due to difficulty in adjusting it to the current Universe.

James Gunn, the new co-chairman and co-CEO at DC Studios reacted to the report on Twitter. He wrote, “So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not”. The director has said that they are currently sketching the ten years plan and the studio is in a “transitional period”.

So, during the period, he said, “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives”.
