Almost twenty years after ‘The Dark Knight‘ established a gold standard of superhero storytelling, there is one criticism that remains: Harvey Dent never received the depth he deserved as Two-Face.
However, at this point, everything is pointing to the fact that ‘The Batman Part II’ may finally do so and provide the character with the attention that he has been lacking.
After Years Of Missed Potential, Two-Face Could Finally Shine

Christopher Nolan’s film remains iconic for a reason. Acting by Heath Ledger and Christian Bale is still discussed even today, and the chaotic philosophy of the Joker influenced the whole story. But in doing so, Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face became more of a narrative tool than a fully realized character arc.

The Dark Knight shows Dent’s great fall, but it felt rushed. His fall into Two-Face is more of a way to demonstrate the Joker’s worldview, rather than to delve into Dent’s psyche. It is effective in the story being told, but you wish it were more. That is the annoying thing. Two-Face is not a villain; he is one of the most tragic characters of Gotham.
A man who was a believer in justice was instead devoured by the same chaos that he was fighting against. When that complexity is simplified to a handful of scenes and a climax, it seems like incomplete business. And that is precisely what ‘The Batman Part II’ appears to be poised to take advantage of.
A Deeper, Darker Take On Harvey Dent

Initial news about the follow-up suggests a far more complex treatment. As in ‘The Batman’, Robert Pattinson returns, and the movie is likely to maintain its grounded, character-driven nature. However, more to the point, the fact that Sebastian Stan is rumored to play Harvey Dent, and that some of the most important people in his personal life, like his dad, are included in the story, implies that the story is constructed around him, rather than about him.

That shift matters. The investigation of the relationships, upbringing, and moral conflicts of Dent might make his transformation a much more emotional and heart-wrenching one. We may not get a sharp break, but a gradual disintegration, a man struggling to preserve his ideals when all around him is falling.
And, frankly, that is what fans have been anticipating. Not a mere reenactment of Two-Face tossing a coin, but a narrative that makes you feel the gravity behind each choice. Should ‘The Batman Part II’ live up to that promise, it will not only correct a previous failure, but it may well redefine Two-Face to a new generation.
