Vin Diesel Finally Brings ‘Fast & Furious’ to Live-Action TV, but There’s a Catch

In Short
  • Vin Diesel announced the 'Fast & Furious' franchise is expanding into live-action television with four proposed shows.
  • Currently, only one live-action series is being developed for Peacock, while the other three are still in early discussions.
  • The new series will focus on legacy characters and is being produced by Universal Television, with a pilot script in progress.

Vin Diesel has recently made a big announcement that got everyone in the advertising world talking. According to his announcement, the ‘Fast & Furious‘ franchise is finally jumping into live-action television.

However, there’s a twist that sounds like something from one of their own messy plots. Sources say that while Diesel announced four shows, Peacock is only moving forward with one right now.

At the NBCUniversal upfront event in New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Diesel, who has played Dominic Toretto for over twenty years, came on stage with Jimmy Fallon to share the news. “For the last decade, we have realized that the fans have wanted more,” Diesel told the crowd. “They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space that Fallon has mastered.”

Diesel made it sound like a huge streaming expansion was coming. He said, “The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the Fast and Furious universe.” That got people excited and wondering how so much content could be made for the streaming service.

But according to a source who knows the plans, as reported by Variety, the truth is more low-key. Even though Diesel talked about four projects, only one live-action series is actually being worked on at Peacock. The other three are just ideas or early talks at Universal Television. NBCUniversal’s own press release later that day only listed one ‘Fast & Furious‘ show, pulling back on the “four universe” tease.

Why ‘Fast & Furious’ Took So Long to Reach Live-Action TV

Diesel explained why it took so long to bring the franchise to TV. “I had to wait till it was right,” he said. He credited Donna Langley, NBCUniversal’s chief content officer, for making him trust the series on the small screen. “It became right when Donna Langley started to oversee it all, because that’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space.

The show has a pilot script being written right now. Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman, known for their work on ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ and ‘Shades of Blue‘, are attached as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers. Diesel will executive produce alongside longtime franchise people Neal Moritz, Chris Morgan, and Jeff Kirschenbaum. Universal Television will make the series for Peacock.

Not much is known about the plot. The official description just says “More to come.” However, Diesel hinted at a focus on “legacy characters,” which suggests the show might bridge the gap between the final movie and what comes next. The last film, called ‘Fast Forever‘, is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2028.

This isn’t the franchise’s first time doing a TV show. There was the Netflix animated series ‘Fast & Furious Spy Racers‘, which ran for six seasons. But this new Peacock project is the first time Toretto’s world of heists, family, and jaw-dropping stunts will be done in live action for the small screen.

The franchise is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Diesel seems focused on making sure that even as the movies come to an end, the family legacy keeps going on streaming for years, even if it’s only in one lane for now.
