Elon Musk-Owned X Sues Media Matters After Advertisers Flee The Platform

Elon Musk took control of X, aka Twitter, a sinking ship. The billionaire made a deal to purchase the company in October 2022 for $44 billion. He had a vision to revamp the platform to make it conducive to free speech and a source of monetization for the creators. However, ever since he acquired X, the finances have been plummeting despite his best efforts to devise policies to increase them.

Elon Musk introduced a subscription plan for users on X to access some exclusive features on the platform. After the initial havoc, he reintroduced a properly structured system in place. However, there are many loopholes in the policies that he is devising, as the advertisement revenue has not been great. Musk’s peddling of anti-Semitism has made corporations stop advertising their products on the platform, according to a report by Media Matters America. Now, the ex-CEO has sued the think tank.

It has been a field day for the tech companies with the OpenAI drama and advertisers fleeing from X. It all started when Elon Musk agreed to a reply on X about the Jews, which was anti-Semitic.

Media Matters For America also published a report that X is placing advertisements for major corporations like Apple next to anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi content. Due to this, major corporations like IBM, Apple, Disney, and organizations like the EU decided to stop advertising on X, leading to a major revenue loss for the platform.

Now, Elon Musk’s X has decided to sue the think tank for the advertisers’ exodus. They filed a lawsuit in Texas Federal Court on Monday alleging that the organization “knowingly and maliciously manufactured” the report to misguide the advertisers about X putting the advertisements near pro-Hitler posts.

The company is asking for monetary compensation and a court order ruling that the organization remove the report with immediate effect.

In the lawsuit filed in Texas, Elon Musk’s X accuses Media Matters of systematically manipulating “the X user experience” to generate the report. The lawsuit stated, “Media Matters did not find pairings that X passively allowed on the platform.”

It continued, “Media Matters created these pairings in secrecy, to manufacture the harmful perception that X is at best an incompetent content moderator, or even worse that X was somehow indifferent or even encouraging to Nazi and racist ideology.”

The lawsuit pointed out the method that the organization used to manipulate the platform’s algorithm to create the report. X alleges that a group made temporary profiles and followed both corporations and some divisive groups, making the algorithm think that the group “wanted to view both hateful content and content from large advertisers.”
