Peaky Blinders: Showrunner Discusses The Ending Of Season 6 And Future Projects

British television series “Peaky Blinders” recently aired the last episode of its sixth season in the UK. Peaky Blinders is a gangster drama series and Stevin Knight is the creator and the showrunner. It is based in Birmingham, England. It recounts the adventures of the Peaky Blinders gang in the immediate aftermath of World War I. The fictitious gang is partially based on a real-life urban youth band of the same name that operated in the town between the 1890s and 1910s.

Cillian Murphy portrays Tommy Shelby as the lead. The Show also has Helen McCrory as Elizabeth “Polly” Gray, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, and Joe Cole as John Shelby, the gang’s senior members. Tom Hardy, Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, and Iddo Goldberg appear in the show from time to time. The series was first broadcast on 12 September 2013 on BBC’s channels. Five series were displayed on BBC whereas Netflix acquired the rights for the 6th season to be broadcasted in the US and all over the world. The 6th season was declared to be the final season and then a spinoff would be released. The last season, which finished on 3rd April 2022, received great critical acclaim.

Steven Knight recently discussed the ending of season 6 with regards to Tommy Shelby and about the future of the “gangster”. Knight gave an interview to Deadline after the season 6 finale aired on the BBC. He discussed the series and its intentions to be turned into a feature picture. Steven said, “Does that mean he’s now a good man?.. Well, what I want to do — that’s the implication — but when we find him during World War II, is he a good man? Has he been redeemed? Let’s see. I don’t know that yet either…

The way I like to think of it is that he began the series as dead inside, as were a lot of people after World War I, and then slowly he sort of thawed out. But it’s a painful process because as the feeling returns, it’s painful. So that’s what we’ve been witnessing; that’s why I wanted to end it on the 11th hour and peace at last.”

Knight agreed that his character’s resurrection “was the implication”. He further said this topic would be addressed in the next feature picture.

Viewers were excited about the last episode named Lock and Key. They waited to see if protagonist Tommy would be slain by his cousin Michael Gray (Finn Cole), who makes it known from the start that he wanted the war veteran turned criminal dead.

Tommy connected up loose ends concerning his family and business in light of his diagnosis. He attempted to make the remaining members of his clan comfortable. He appointed his illegitimate son Erasmus ‘Duke’ Shelby as his successor and he made sure the other son Charles handles the ‘light’ side of the business.

Tommy was once again approached by his cousin, who was hell-bent on avenging his mother Polly’s (Helen McCrory) murder. But To everyone’s surprise, Tommy shoots Michael in the eye, killing him instantaneously. This fulfilled Polly Gray’s (Helen McCrory) prophecy that the cousins would fight and one of them would die.
