Why Was Witch-King So Powerful?
The Númenóreans were very powerful when compared to the other beings in Middle-Earth. Three of the nine Nazguls were Númenóreans. Thus it can be assumed that the most powerful of the Nines, the Witch-King was most probably a Númenórean. Being a sorcerer also increased his might double fold. And, with the Ring given by Sauron, it can be understood that his abilities would have hiked immensely. His superhuman skills would have also increased as he partnered with the Dark Lord.
Witch-king becomes captain of Nazguls also due to the shortcomings of the other Nazguls. As mentioned in ‘Unfinished Tales‘, the other Nazguls would stray in daylight and also had a fear of water except for the Witch-King, which made him indestructible.
