With excitement building around ‘Supergirl‘, one detail that has been revealed is already causing discussion among DC fans: the runtime of the film.

The upcoming film will be one of the most significant films in the DC Universe after Superman, with Milly Alcock playing Kara Zor-El. However, the film doesn’t seem to be trying to tell a large story;  it seems like it’s taking a more focused approach.

A Smaller Runtime Doesn’t Mean A Smaller Adventure

Clocking in at just under 1 hour and 48 minutes, ‘Supergirl‘ will be one of the shortest movies by DC. With comic book blockbusters often running over two hours, the shorter time period is a breath of fresh air and could be a plus for the film.

For some fans, a short running time for a superhero film can be a concern. However, film history demonstrates that shorter films tend to be more tightly told and have more solid pacing. There are many beloved comic book movies that didn’t even reach the two-hour mark.

The directors can cut away from the unnecessary scenes and keep the story moving. This makes it a more lively experience that doesn’t feel too long. From the trailers and promotional videos, it’s clear that ‘Supergirl’ is already quite different from the previous DC films.

The film is set in a colorful cosmos, populated by weird worlds, alien adventures, and super-sized characters. Despite the shorter runtime, there’s plenty to do with the arrival of Lobo (Jason Momoa) and the return of familiar faces such as Krypto. The film could benefit from being more focused on Kara’s journey rather than being rushed.

The runtime also mirrors a trend in the DC Universe of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Instead of making every project seem like a huge event, the studio seems more interested in telling a story that fits their characters. That’s a positive indicator.

When it works, audiences will accept a lighter, more character-driven approach. ‘Supergirl’ looks like it’s going to keep that trend going, but in a very different part of the DCU. Most of all, the film will not be burdened with creating a whole world.

Since the DCU is already in full swing, the film can concentrate on building up Kara as a hero and carving out her niche in this changing world. Sometimes bigger isn’t better. Superhero movies are often longer and more complicated.

Supergirl’s quick and concise runtime may be a breath of fresh air that reminds viewers that a good adventure doesn’t need to have a lot of extra time to make an impact. As long as the story works, viewers might not realize how fast the time passes.
