Why Cardi B May Get Sued For The Marge Simpson Halloween Costume?

The Bronx rapper Cardi B is one of the rappers who established herself in the male-dominated industry. She came into the scene when females were emerging slowly and steadily after the pioneers Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, and Nicki Minaj. She was the disruptor who gained success, because of her bars, flows, and won a Grammy award for her album ‘Invasion of Privacy’. However, she is notorious when it comes to controversies and lawsuits.

The rapper had beef with many artists. One of the major ones is Nicki Minaj. The two got into a physical fight during a Harper’s Bazaar event. Other than beef, she was embroiled in many lawsuits and court cases for brawls and copyright infringement issues. She won an art infringement case when a man was accused of misusing his back tattoos for her 2016 mixtape cover. Cardi B pleaded guilty in the 2018 battery case. Now, she may again find herself ascending the court stairs after an artist threatened to sue her over her Marge Simpson Halloween costume.

For Halloween 2022, Lizzo and Cardi B paid homage to Marge Simpson, the matriarch in ‘The Simpsons’. But, the ‘Clout’ rapper turned the oomph factor up with her Mugler-inspired tribute. Initially, she posted pictures of her get-up in blue hair, with a yellow-painted body, and a skin-tight green body-hugging suit. But, she then recreated a 1995 Mugler black dress with the matriarch and posted the picture and inspiration on her social media platforms.

But, now the original artist behind the inspiration may take legal action. AleXsandro Palombo, an Italian artist accused Cardi of recreating the look “without any authorisation”. The artist is known to turn the characters from the show with his twist. In 2013, Palombo released his artwork titled ‘Marge Simpson Style Icon’ series in Vogue UK. One of the artworks was the inspiration that Cardi B used for her Halloween costume.

On November 26th, 2022, AleXsandro took to his Instagram to address the situation and give an update. In his post, he wrote, “Cardi B and her collaborators have used my artwork without any authorisation, debasing its original meaning and only to amplify their image with a clear commercial purpose that has nothing to do with that path of social awareness that has always characterised my works”.

The artist tried to contact the photographer Jora Frantzis and stylist Kollin Carter for an answer, but he did not get any answer from them either. The people involved in creating the post did not tag him.

His lawyer Claudio Volpi told Artnet News, “Cardi B has illegitimately appropriated the work of aleXsandro Palombo for mere business purposes in defiance of the most elementary rules on copyright and Instagram policies, with the consequent serious risks, both of compensation and of discredit for her public image”. The lawyer has sent a notice to Cardi B, Frantzis, and Atlantic Records’ Craig Kallman for a reply. If they do not comply within seven days, Claudio and his client will take legal action against them.
