2023 has been a year of great loss for fans who stanned for their favorite couples. The year unfolded as most of the lovebirds in the industry broke up, or had ugly- sometimes understanding- divorce.
With the likes of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, Ariana Grande, and Dalton Gomez, most of these splits came across as unexpected and hard to believe. Here are the top ten celebrity breakups of the year that we did not have on our 2023 bingo, but managed to break our hearts.

Ariana Grande And Dalton Gomez
The ‘pov’ singer separated from her husband after reports of her cheating on her husband and having an affair with married actor Ethan Slater surfaced.
The singer is now said to be dating Slater as he files for divorce from his ex-wife and Grande has constantly shown up to support her new partner.
Rosalia And Rauw Alejandro
After being together for more than three years, Rosalia and Rauw Alejandro headed for a breakup and called off their engagement. Though no reason behind the breakup has been revealed, sources claim, “Despite the love and respect the singers have for one another, they have both agreed to end their engagement.”
Meryl Streep And Don Gummer
In a surprising report by Page Six, it was revealed that Streep and Gummer have been separated for more than six years.
A representative of the couple said, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,”

Britney Spears And Sam Asghari
Having one of the messiest divorces of the year, Britney and Sam’s divorce is filled with allegations, blackmail, and a lot of supposed cheating. There were reports of Spears being assaulted by Asghari, as well as infidelity accusations on both parts. Sam had also blackmailed Britney, threatening to share her personal details with the world.
Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner
The Jonas brother filed for divorce from his ladylove Sophie Turner, who he has two kids with. The aftermath of the breakup was Sophie joining Taylor Swift’s squad and were seen holding hands and going out together multiple times.
The divorce had a few nasty turns when both parties accused each other of separating the children from them. As of now, according to reports, they have found an arrangement and are now comfortable co-parenting.
Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello
The ‘Modern Family’ actress and her husband of seven years filed for divorce this year, announcing it themselves with a statement to Page Six.
“We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives” the statement read.
Another source says, “Sofía and Joe have been growing apart for a while now and are taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future.”

Taylor Swift And Joe Alwyn
Perhaps the most shocking breakup of 2023 was Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s split after six years of togetherness and her writing more than twenty songs for him. The breakup was apparently not dramatic and the relationship just ran its course. That did not stop Swifties and Swift herself from bashing Alwyn and being shady towards him.
Taylor releasing ‘You’re Losing Me’ and dropping a few statements in her interviews has us all thinking that there might be more to the breakup than we think.
Jim Toth And Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth shared a joint statement on their social media that announced their breakup after 12 years of marriage.
The statement read, “It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
“Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time,” they concluded.
Hugh Jackman And Deborra-lee Jackman
Almost three decades of marriage later, the Jackmans separated and shared a statement via People.
Their statement says, “We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority” the statement continued, “We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
The couple shared two kids, Oscar, 23, and Ava, 18.
Natalie Portman And Benjamin Millepied
Married for eleven years, Natalie and Benjamin separated after news of his infidelity surfaced. A source said, “After news of his affair came out, they’ve been trying to work on their marriage but are currently on the outs.”
Benjamin reportedly cheated with Camille Étienne, a climate activist. Soon after Portman was spotted without her engagement ring and the couple have since been rumored to separate. They have two kids together. Their son Aleph, 12, and daughter Amalia, 6.
