What Was Prince Charles And Camilla’s Royal Tampongate Scandal?

The royal family has had its share of dramas, secrets, and scandals. Perhaps Prince Charles (now King Charles III) has been at the center of many of these things, mostly because of his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles (now Queen consort) while he was married to Princess Diana.

What is famously known as the ‘Tampongate’ scandal was actually a leaked private conversation between Prince Charles and Camilla. It was, what we call in modern times, ‘sexting.’ The entire conversation was filled with sexual and intimate exchanges.

The Sunday Mirror leaked the phone call transcript in 1993, but the actual call took place a few years back in 1989. In 1989, as is known, both Charles and Camilla were married to different people. While the entire conversation included sexually intimate yearnings, there was one line in which Prince Charles expressed his wish to be a tampon to feel closer to Camilla, which specifically caught everyone’s attention and became so famous that the phone call got termed after it, that is, ‘Tampongate Scandal’.

A part of the conversation was:

Camilla: “Mmm. You’re awfully good at feeling your way along.”

Charles: “Oh stop! I want to feel my way along you, all over you and up and down you and in and out . . . particularly in and out.

Camilla: “Oh, that’s just what I need at the moment. I know it would revive me. I can’t bear a Sunday night without you.”

Charles adds that he “fills up [Camilla’s] tank”, stating that he “needs [her] several times a week.”Adding, “Oh, God. I’ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!

Camilla (laughs): “What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? Oh, you’re going to come back as a pair of knickers.”

Charles: “Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck! My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.”

As the tapes got published in the British tabloids, it sent ripples of disbelief, shock and repulsion across the Buckingham Palace and the citizens alike. It also proved Princess Diana’s claims of infidelity on Prince Charles’s part true. However, their separation was announced before the release of the tapes, and the divorce finalised in 1996. Ken Wharfe, Princess Diana’s former personal protection officer, in his book ‘Guarding Diana: Protecting The Princess Around The World’, wrote, “The backlash was savage. Establishment figures normally loyal to the future King and country were appalled, and some questioned the Prince’s suitability to rule.”

The tapes also led to the divorce of Camilla and her husband, Andrew Parker Bowles. However, despite all, Prince Charles and Camilla maintained their relationship throughout the years and eventually married in 2005.
