When Harry Styles Received Backlash For His Comments On Gay Sex In Films

After parting ways with the boy band One Direction, Harry Styles has carved his niche, straddling both the worlds of music and films. Since 2016, Harry has released three studio albums and went on ‘Love on Tour’, a global tour. The artist also won the ‘Album of the Year’ Grammy for ‘Harry’s House’. Other than this, Styles has also worked in feature films.

In 2017, Harry Styles debuted in Christopher Nolan’s World War drama ‘Dunkirk’. Styles dabbled into the space of gay romance in Michael Grandage’s stage-to-celluloid adaptation of ‘My Policeman’ in 2022. It also starred David Dawson as his love interest. Set in the 1950s, it explores the tender love between two men amidst the criminalized state of sodomy. In the film, Styles and David indulged in some sex scenes, and the singer’s comment about the intimate scenes in gay films attracted ire from people.

The representation of gay men in cinema has evolved so much from the anti-sodomy era to the legalization of homosexuality. The black-and-white era showcased some films that represented the longing and tenderness of this forbidden love as an act of resistance. Many contemporary films like ‘120 BPM’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name’ showed tenderness and sensitivity through some heart-wrenching intimate scenes.

However, Harry Styles believed that sex between gay men in films has always been raunchy, and his scenes with David Dawson in ‘My Policeman’ are the epitome of intimacy between two men. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Styles addressed the intimate scenes in his film as being opposite to what new media has always peddled.

Harry said, “So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it.”

Harry continued, “There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [Michael] wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.”

Since Harry Styles became a public figure with the onset of his boy band, One Direction, fans have always been curious about every aspect of his life. When he was a part of One Direction, the directors were very curious about the sexual lives of all the members. The media and tabloids filled the papers and the internet with conjectures about their sexual lives.

During an interview with Better Homes & Gardens, Harry Styles admitted feeling guilty about how his lack of privacy led to a spotlight on his s** life. The ‘Matilda’ singer said, “For a long time, it felt like the only thing that was mine was my sex life. I felt so ashamed about it, ashamed at the idea of people even knowing that I was having sex, let alone who with.”

Styles added, “At the time, there were still the kiss-and-tell things. Working out who I could trust was stressful. But I think I got to a place where I was like, why do I feel ashamed? I’m a 26-year-old man who’s single; it’s like, yes, I have sex.”
