Buckle up, ‘House of the Dragon‘ fans Season 2 promises to be a firestorm of political intrigue and familial conflict. At the center of this maelstrom lies the complex relationship between Prince Daemon Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, a bond that actress Emma D’Arcy hints will face some serious challenges.
D’Arcy, who portrays the now-grown Rhaenyra, recently spoke about the couple’s dynamic in the upcoming season. While their connection was a source of strength and solace in season 1, it seems their path won’t be paved with dragon scales.
Emma D’Arcy On Daemon And Rhaenyra Targaryen’s ‘House Of The Dragon’ Season 2 Dynamics
“They’re not good communicators,” D’Arcy revealed in an interview with ET. This, according to the actor, is a “fundamental flaw” in their relationship. D’Arcy elaborates on the root of this communication issue. Both Daemon and Rhaenyra have endured immense loss and hardship.
They find comfort and understanding in each other, having walked a similar path. However, this shared experience creates a dynamic where they’re both hesitant to show vulnerability. “They don’t want to be seen to be weak,” D’Arcy explained. This creates a situation where open communication takes a backseat.
Daemon and Rhaenyra are two powerful dragons, soaring through the treacherous skies of Westeros. They understand each other’s fire and fury but struggle to acknowledge their own moments of doubt and fear. Additionally, this inability to be vulnerable with each other could lead to misunderstandings and resentment.
There’s a glimmer of hope amidst the impending storm, however. D’Arcy acknowledges that despite the communication hurdles, there’s a genuine connection between Daemon and Rhaenyra. They are, after all, united by their Targaryen blood and a shared ambition for the Iron Throne.
Additionally, this bond could be the anchor they need to navigate the coming challenges. Whether Daemon and Rhaenyra can overcome their communication issues and find solace in each other remains to be seen.

Matt Smith On Daemon Targaryen’s Duties Causing A “Deeper Fragmentation” Between Him And Rhaenyra
Matt Smith also chimed in talking about his feelings toward the relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra in season 2. “We pick up in a very complicated situation,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of grief flying around in the air and I think, you know, Daemon is doing things that he thinks are for the benefit of the family. Things he’s sort of duty-bound to do really,” he added.
However, all of this according to him “invariably creates a deeper fragmentation between” the couple. Perhaps as the season progresses, Daemon and Rhaenyra will learn to break down the walls they’ve built around themselves. Additionally, they might discover that true strength lies not in masking vulnerability, but in acknowledging it and finding support in each other.
