    ‘Demon Slayer’ is one of the most popular anime of all time. The fans love the anime for a multitude of reasons, one of which is the characters of the show. The show has a great collection of characters, each with their own distinct quality and personality trait. Whilst all the characters are different, some characters have something in common. 

    Many characters of the show have tragic pasts and horrendous stories. This includes the demon slayers, the Hashira, and even the demons. Fans wish to know who among all the characters of the show has the most tragic backstories.

    5) Tanjiro Kamado

    Kamado Tanjiro is the protagonist of the show. He is also the second user of the sun breathing technique. He has one of the most tragic stories. His entire family was killed by a demon and Tanjiro found out when he returned after collecting wood. His sister, Nezuko, was the only person who survived and she was turned into a demon. He had one of the most tragic backstories in ‘Demon Slayer’

    Kokushibo is the elder twin of the sun-breathing creator, Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Before he was turned into a demon, Kokushibo, then known as Michikatsu, was not as strong as his brother. Out of jealousy, Kokushibo chose to become a demon and killed his little brother. However, after killing him, he saw that he carried the flute that Kokushibo gave him as a child and he shed a tear. He had one of the most tragic backstories in ‘Demon Slayer’. 

    3) Gyomei Himejima

    Gyomei used to protect nine children. One day a kid snuck out and encountered a demon. In exchange for his life, the child let the demon enter the temple. The other children of the temple didn’t trust Gyomei and all were killed except Sayo who listened to Gyomei. However, during Sayo’s retelling to the villagers, the villagers misunderstood and thought Gyomei killed the children. He was wrongfully imprisoned but was saved by Kagaya Ubuyashiki.

    Sanemi and Genya grew up with an abusive father who was later killed by someone who hated him. After that, Sanemi took care of his seven siblings and his mother. One day his mother was turned into a demon. She then came back to the house and killed all of his siblings. Only Genya was able to survive and that was because Sanemi killed his mother. He has one of the most tragic backstories in ‘Demon Slayer’

    Akaza’s story is perhaps the most tragic. When he was a human, Akaza used to steal a lot to take care of his ill father. After his father found out about this, he killed himself to avoid being a burden. A dojo owner offered to take him and teach him how to fight in exchange for helping with his daughter Kyouki. Akaza fell in love with Kyouki. However, a rival dojo owner who wanted his space poisoned Kyouki to get back at Akaza for defeating him. After that Akaza went on a rampage and killed 67 people at the rival dojo.
