Location And Entrance
The Dark Continent was first introduced during the last episodes of the anime. Ging mentioned it to Gon when they were sitting atop the world tree. He said that the place is so dangerous that even seasoned hunters struggle there. The known world in ‘Hunter X Hunter’ is a piece of land surrounded by a water body known as Lake Mobius.
The dark continent is a place that is beyond Lake Mobius. One requires a guide to set foot on the land. The guide is a being summoned by the gatekeeper who is a magical beast. No one can cross the lake Mobius let alone enter the Dark Continent without the help of the guide.
Known Voyages To The Dark Continent
The voyages to the dark continent need to be sanctioned by the V5. In the last few years, 149 voyages were made out of which only 5 were successful. Netero, the chairman of the hunter association, was one of the people to set foot into the place.
It is said that when the five supposed voyages returned to the known world, they brought with them five threats. These threats are assumed to be beings of the dark continent and are said to be extremely powerful. The threats include the botanical weapon Brion, a snake with two tails called Hellbell, a gaseous lifeform called Ai, the pet-keeping Pap, and, finally, the Zobae Disease. Fans speculate that Ai is the entity that possesses Alluka.
The Relation To The Chimera Ants
When Ging and Gon were talking, Ging mentioned that the chimera ants weren’t creatures of the known world. It was also shown in the series that the chimera ant queen drifted to shore and no further history or background of the species was shown.
It is not yet confirmed that the species belongs to the dark continent but fans speculate. There may be a possibility that chimera ants are a species of the new continent, a place in Lake Mobius that humanity never set foot in. The chimera ants were so powerful that they disrupted the entire world. If the species belongs to the dark continent, it is a testament to the dangerous beasts living there. In addition to that, according to past explorations, the ants aren’t even close to being the most dangerous things in the Dark Continent.
The Journey To The New World
A man named Don Freecss made the journey to the Dark Continent around 300 years back. He wrote a journal called the journey to the new world. Don divided the journal into two parts, and only the east part is found.
Ging Freecss believes that the west part of the journal is not found because Don is actually alive and is still writing the other part. Based on the available information about the place, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think that a human survived there for 300 years.
