“It Makes Me Really Sad”: Daniel Radcliffe Opens Up About J.K. Rowling’s Anti-Transgender Stance

J.K. Rowling is the mind behind a fantasy world that perhaps no one else would have been able to carve out and adorn millions of childhoods with. However, her infamous transphobic stance has garnered some heavy criticism for the writer, including from the actors of her own films.

Just a few weeks ago, J.K. Rowling mentioned in a tweet ‘Harry Potter’ stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson can “save their apologies” for speaking up against her views on transgenders. Striking back at the author again, Radcliffe has given out a statement to ensure that he still maintains his previous stance, while also clarifying that it hurts him to see Rowling being adamant with her stance.

Most popular for his pivotal role as Harry Potter in the iconic franchise, Daniel Radcliffe said he feels profoundly sadness over J.K. Rowling’s recent remarks against the transgender community. The writer of the Harry Potter books, Rowling has long held a contentious stance against the transgender community, often making heavily controversial remarks on social media that meet with significant backlash.

In the comments section of a recent tweet, Rowling made it clear that she does not intend to forgive ‘Harry Potter‘ stars for standing up against her views in the past. Responding to Rowling’s dig at him and his co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, Radcliffe responded with a rather emotional note, while still standing his ground.

It makes me really sad, ultimately,” Radcliffe told The Atlantic, adding that he hasn’t been in touch with the author since she first spoke out against the trans community. “I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic,” the actor added.

He also acknowledged the important role that Rowling has played in his career, but asserted that he would separate the woman’s problematic views from her exceptional talent and contribution. “Nothing in my life would have probably happened the way it is without that person. But that doesn’t mean that you owe the things you truly believe to someone else for your entire life,” he said.

Daniel Radcliffe was responding to a remark that J.K. Rowling made about him and the other ‘Harry Potter’ actors in the comments section of a recent X post where she uploaded a research paper supporting her transphobic views. In the comments section, a social media user suggested that the actors should ask for her forgiveness for disregarding her views in the past.

To the comment, Rowling responded in a positive, even as she asserted that the actors can save their apologies. “Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces,” Rowling wrote.

Radcliffe had also previously stood up with the trans community while Rowling refused to consider trans-women as women. In a supportive statement for the community of the Trevor Project in 2020, the actor said, “I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now,” adding that “transgender women are women.”
